Abstract: The present invention is directed to an apparatus and method for treating obesity. A tube is positioned that passes through a patient~s abdominal wall into the upper digestive system of the patient. The patient is allowed to carry out his/her everyday affairs including ingesting food. After the patient has ingested food, the food is extracted by pumping it out of the upper digestive system through the tube. The present invention is less invasive than current surgical procedures for reducing weight and allows patients to live a normal and active lifestyle without experiencing adverse side effects.

Abstract: A reciprocating positive displacement pumping system has a rigid chamber wall to which a flexible membrane is attached defining a pumping chamber. An inlet and outlet allow liquid flow. A rigid limit structure limits the movement of the membrane and the maximum volume of the pumping chamber defining an actuation chamber. An actuation port through which a fluid under positive or negative pressure can communicate with the actuation chamber is configured to connect to a positive pressure fluid reservoir and a negative pressure fluid reservoir through a valving mechanism for controlling the flow of control fluid between the actuation chamber and each of the reservoirs. An actuation chamber pressure transducer measures the pressure of the actuation chamber and a controller integrates pressure information from the actuation chamber pressure transducer over time during a stroke to detect an aberrant liquid flow condition.

Abstract: A system for pumping a biological fluid includes a disposable unit for pumping the fluid and a base unit for actuating the disposable unit. The disposable unit includes a pair of spheroid pump pods with flexible membranes and controllable inlet and outlet valves. The actuation chambers of the pumps are connected to actuation ports configured for direct connection to pneumatic ports of the base unit.
