    Abstract: A miniature magnetometer includes a planar magnetoresistive element (14) having a height H between lateral edges. First and second laminated flux collectors (16, 18) of height H partially overlap, respectively, the lateral edges of the magnetoresistive element in co-planar relationship wherein the flux collectors are separated laterally by a gap G which is less than the height H of the magnetoresistive element. The magnetic field sensor (10) has a resultant height of 2H+G, with the ratio (2H+G)/G being approximately 95 in a presently preferred embodiment.

    Abstract: The invention teaches modifying the shape of a bar magnet (30, 94) which is uniformly magnetized either in the direction of its height (42) or width (96) to increase the volume of magnetic material at each end of the magnet (30, 94). This results in increased magnetic field contribution from the magnet ends which modifies the field direction at the magnet faces so that the field lines converge rather than diverge just as they enter and leave the central portion of the magnet (30, 94). Further along the field direction, the field lines change from being convergent to again being divergent, as is the usual case for a conventional bar magnet. Because of this transition there is an extended region (56, 112) over which the field lines are effectively straight and parallel, i.e. the field is uniform. This uniformity has been attained without increasing the length of the magnet (30, 94), and a bar magnet so modified according to the teaching of the invention is suitable for the uniform biaising of MR elements (62, 64, 66) in a single track or in a multitrack head.

En outre le long du sens dudit champ, les lignes de ce dernier repassent d'un état convergent à un état divergent, ce qui se produit habituellement pour un aimant droit classique. Du fait de cette transition, il existe une région étendue (56, 112) sur laquelle les lignes du champ sont effectivement droites et parallèles, c'est-à-dire que le champ est uniforme. On a atteint cette uniformité sans augmenter la longueur de l'aimant (30, 94), et un aimant droit modifié selon l'invention convient pour la polarisation uniforme d'éléments MR (62, 64, 66) dans une seule piste ou dans une tête multipiste.

    Abstract: An MR dual element head (70) of the present invention solves a shorting problem between sensing and mutually biasing MR elements of a dual element head without suffering the penalty of signal reduction due to shunting of sense current. In a preferred embodiment, two MR elements (72, 74) are neither totally insulated from each other, nor shorted along their entire lengths by a contiguous conductive spacer, but are separated by an insulating layer (76) which has shorting stubs (78, 80) at its ends for electrically shorting the MR elements. A current (82) applied to the shorted MR elements splits into two currents (88, 90) that flow in the same direction through the substantially identical MR elements to provide the bias, and to serve as sense currents for detecting element resistance change. The MR elements are biased to operate in a magnetically unsaturated mode. This results in a 'bootstrapping' of short wavelength signals that effectively amplifies the reproduced signal over a broad region of the signal spectrum when the linear spacing between the MR elements is in the range of from one half to one times the linear distance between the flux changes recorded on the signal medium. In a second embodiment, MR elements (12, 14) are in contact with a conductive spacer (16) for their entire lengths.

    Abstract: A ''C'' shaped thin film deposited permanent magnetic structure (30) of essentially symmetrical form is designed to provide a planar region of transverse field (37) with little or no longitudinal field component. Practice of the present invention teaches asymmetrically modifiying the ''C'' shaped magnet to restore a small controlled amount of unidirectional longitudinal field component (31).
