Abstract: In a packet transmission system, especially wireless transmission system, where data is transmitted in packets at different error protection levels and where the error protection level of one packet (= the succeeding packet) may differ from the error protection level of a preceding packet without providing code termination between the said preceding and the said succeeding packet the performance may degrade in case a different error protection level is used by the preceding packet and the succeeding packet. The invention proposes in these cases to insert a supplementary packet between the preceding and the succeeding packet whereby the error protection level of the supplementary packet is higher than the lowest error protection level that is used either by the preceding or the succeeding packet.

Abstract: In a cellular, broadband radio access network, such as a High Performance Local Area Network Type 2 (HIPERLAN/2), which employs multiple antennas per base station, the process of identifying and selecting the most appropriate base station antenna to support a given mobile terminal may be accomplished more effectively by allowing the mobile terminal to initiate antenna selection and, thereafter, to identify the most appropriate one of the multiple base station antennas. By utilizing the mobile terminal in this capacity, the process of antenna selection can be accomplished more effectively even if there is relatively little uplink communication between the mobile terminal and its corresponding base station.

Abstract: In a wireline or wireless telecommunications system or data network, which employs a Selective Repeat Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) to convey data packet reception status for a sequence of data packets grouped together into a number of blocks of data packets, partial bit mapping is employed to improve efficiency, particularly with respect to bandwidth. This may be accomplished, more specifically, by including in the ARQ message that is sent from the receiver to the sender, a number of partial bitmaps, along with a corresponding number of bitmap block numbers, where a first bitmap block number identifies a particular one of the blocks of data packets and the corresponding bitmap defines the reception status of the data packets in that block. Each of the remaining bitmap block numbers identify an additional block of data packets relative to the first block of data packets. Accordingly, the remaining bitmap block numbers require fewer bits to identify their corresponding data packet blocks.

Abstract: A method and a transceiver for selecting a current transmission mode (Modec) in a data packet oriented communication system. The method comprises the steps of: measuring a current radio link quality ((RLQ)C) for the radio link, estimating on the lower layer a first status value (S1), which corresponds to a state of the automatic request buffer on the higher layer, determining on said lower layer a second status value (S2), which corresponds to a state of the automatic request buffer on said lower layer, calculating for said lower layer a target transmission rate ((N/T)target), wherein said target transmission rate is based on the first (S1) and the second (S2) status value, identifying from the set (Nset) of the available transmission modes (Modei) a subset (NSubset) of transmission modes, each of said transmission modes in the subset (NSubset) provides a maximum transmission of data packets for radio link quality values (RLQ) lower than the current radio link quality ((RLQ)C), and selecting from said subset (NSubset) a transmission mode as the current transmission mode (Modec), which provides the specific transmission rate ((N/T)i) closest to the calculated target transmission rate ((N/T)target)

Abstract: Communication system for transmitting data packets via a plurality of virtual wireless communication links established between a base station and a plurality of operable mobile stations, the communication links having a variable transmission capacity and wherein messages for a requirement-oriented data transmission are transmitted on a plurality of communication links or channels within three types of control data packets. Said control data packets contain messages grouped according to their importance, allowing an efficient error treatment. The partitioning of messages into groups further allows an increase of the flexibility and efficiency of a data transmission, since only necessary control information is transmitted a direct decoding of received control data packets becomes possible without a detour via a higher level of a used communication model.
