Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an image guide of high quality free from the unevenness of video and lowering of resolution, by constituting a conduit having packaged preform rods and light-absorptive glass and by spinning it over heating. CONSTITUTION:Both ends of a composite having preform rods and a light-absorptive glass bar incorporated in a quartz pipe are fitted to a glass lathe, etc., and the composite, while rotated, is heated by an oxyhydrogen burner, etc., to contract the quartz pipe as an external pipe and also to fusing the light-absorptive glass bar for filling the gap of the preform rods, thereby forming the conduit having many preform rods incorporated. Then, only the quartz pipe is removed by mechanical polishing or chemical etching, and this conduit is inserted into a heating furnace and an image guide material is formed over heating and spinning. Consequently, the image guide of high quality free from the unevenness of video and lowering of resolution can be constituted.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber bundle of high precision without a shift in arrangement position by forming the bundle with the cross section area greater at both the ends than at the center part, by providing a plurality of bundles in parallel, and by fixing both the ends in one body. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber bundle is composed of the assembly of optical fiber wires 31A, 31B, 31C... of 8mumphi, for example, in the diameter of a core glass layer at both ends and of 10mumphi in the diameter of a cladding glass layer having an unrequired-light absorbing glass layer covered around the outer circumference, and diameter l1 of both end surfaces is about 2mumphi. Further, diameter l2 of the intermediate part between the end surfaces of the optical fiber bundle is made thin by being spinned and the cross section area of the intermediate part is made less than those of both the end parts to obtain the flexible structure. Consequently, there is no shift in position between both the end surfaces of the fiber bundle and high reliability can be obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To manufacture a metal coated optical fiber of high quality by placing a material tube having a through hole for passing an optical fiber at the center and made of molten metallic material for forming a layer coating the outside of fiber in a path for drawing the fiber. CONSTITUTION:A base material 1 for an optical fiber is put into a heating furnace 2, softened by heating, and drawn into an optical fiber 3. A material tube 21 having a through hole 22 and made of metallic material for forming a layer coating the outside of the fiber 3 is placed in the drawing path while being supported by a vertically movable holding arm 24. The lower end 23 of the tube 21 is melted with a heating furnace 25, and when the fiber 3 passes through the end 23, a metallic layer is formed on the outside of the fiber 3. Al, Sn or the like having a m.p. lower than the softening point of glass is used as the metallic material.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent impurities in a furnace from entering a glass tube for cladding by sealing one end of the tube before putting a glass rod into the tube from the other end. CONSTITUTION:A glass tube 1 with one sealed end for cladding is supported with a holding arm 25 connected to a movable support section 23 which is freely movable in the vertical direction. A previously manufactured preform rod 21 is coaxially fixed in the tube 1 in the clean and dry inert gaseous atmosphere of the tube 1 with a holding arm 22 connected to other movable support section 24. By rotating movable screws 26, 27, the support sections 23, 24 are lowered simultaneously and perpendicularly to feed the tube 1 and the rod 21 into a heating furnace 28, and the tube 1 and the rod 21 are melted by heating and unitedly spun at a prescribed drawing speed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a bundle of optical fibers without forming a preform by packing an outer tube with a group of the optical fibers, putting it in a heating furnace, and drawing the softened tube while evacuating it. CONSTITUTION:A bottomed outer tube 4 made of Vycor glass, quartz or the like is packed with group 2 of arranged optical fibers, and the top of the tube is melted by heating, slightly drawn, and sealed in an ampul shape. The tube 4 is put in a vertical type high-frequency heating furnace 6, the exhast pipe 5 is connected to an exhaust system, and while evacuating the tube, drawing is carried out from the lower part to form a bundle 9 of the optical fibers. This bundle 9 is introduced into synthetic resin 8 for protective coating in a container 7 having a tapered section, and it is pulled out of the container 7 through the lower small hole to form a protective coat on the bundle.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare an optical fiber having low transmission loss and capable of transmitting high quality image, easily, by coating the inner surface of a glass tube successively with a metal-containing colored layer, a covering layer, and a core layer having high refractive index, by vapor-phase chemical reaction, and reducing the diameter of the tube. CONSTITUTION:SiCl4, GeCl4, POCl3 TiCl4 and BBr3 are charged to the containers 2,3,4,5 and 6, respectively, and bubbled by introducing carrier gas such as Ar. A mixture of vapor from the containers 2,4,5 and 6 is introduced into a supporting tube 1 which is heated and rotated. The vapor-phase reaction of the mixed vapor with O2 converts the vapor to a glass-forming soot, and deposits soot, composed of SiO2, P2O5, B2O3 and Ti2O3. The first layer I thus obtained has the color of Ti . Then, the second layer having low refractive index and composed of SiO2, B2O3 and P2O5, and the third layer having high refractive index and composed of SiO2 containing GeO2 and P2O5, are deposited in order. The center hole H is crushed to obtain a solid rod, the supporting tube 1 is removed e.g. by polishing, the diameter of the rod is reduced, and the desired optical fiber is prepared from the rod.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To allow the center of a core to agree with the center of a clad by putting an inner crucible connected to a core glass melting crucible in an outer crucible connected to a clad glass melting crucible so that the relative positions can be adjusted freely. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber manufacturing crucible is composed of inner crucible 13 connected to core glass melting crucible 12 having U-shaped tubular conduit 11 at the bottom and of outer crucible 15 connected to clad glass melting crucible 14. Inner crucible 13 is in outer crucible 15 with gap C in-between, and owing to gap C crucibles 13, 15 can be moved slightly and relatively in the longitudinal X, lateral Y and height Z directions. Thus, the center of a core agrees with the center of a clad layer, and an optical fiber free from eccentricity and having a desired core diameter to outside diameter ratio is obtd.
