Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a sheet having good dimensional accuracy of the spaces between respective optical fiber strands by juxtaposing plural pieces of preformed optical fiber base aterials, attaching cladding members on both sides of the juxtaposed base material group with said group in-between and stretching the same into one body under heating. CONSTITUTION:Plural pieces of slender bar-like optical fiber base materials 1 made by stretching base materials beforehand to about 8mm. outside diameter are juxtaposed in parallel that tight contact with each other. Plates 2, 2' of, for example, ''Vycor '' glass having a softening temp. lower than that of the materials 1 and a coefft. of thermal expansion nearly equal to that of said materials are attached on both sides along the juxtaposing direction and both ends of the plates 2, 2' are melt stuck, whereby a base material group 11 is produced. With one end part of the group 11 held supported, the other end part is fed into a heating furnace where said part is stretched and drawn out successively to one body under heating, whereby a long sized optical fiber sheet 4 having prescribed thickness, width and good accuracy in the spaces between the respective core layers 1a-1h is manufactured easily and efficiently.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To manufacture a self-focusing optical fiber having excellent transmission characteristics over a wide wavelength range, by interrupting the feed of the raw material gas for the formation of glass layer after deposition of each layer of the reaction product forming a glass layer, and introducing only the gas containing dopant for the control of the refractive index into the hollow glass tube. CONSTITUTION:The raw material gas for forming a glass layer and the dopant- containing gas are introduced into the hollow glass tube 1 from the raw material evaporator 3 and the dopant evaporator 4 respectively at predetermined rates, and the glass tube 1 is heated with the heating means 2 to effect the chemical reaction of the mixed gas and deposit one layer of the reaction product in the glass tube 1. The introduction of the raw material gas from the raw material evaporator 3 is interrupted, and only the dopant-containing gas is introduced into the tube to form the first glass layer. The similar procedures are repeated to deposit about 50 layers of glass each having different content of dopant for the control of the refractive index, i.e. having higher refractive index than the preceding layer.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To manufacture an optical fiber of high strength by formng a rodlike base material for an optical fiber compoed of a glass core layer and a glass clad layer which are different from each other in refractive index, putting the base material into a glass tube havig a higher coefft. of thermal expansion than the clad layer, and spinning them. CONSTITUTION:A high silicate glass tube 1 having a coefft. of thermal expansion higher than quartz glass is supported with a holding arm 7 conncted to to a support section 5 which is freely movable in the vertical direction. A rodlike quartz base material 2 for an optical fiber composed of a core layer and a clad layer having a refractive index lower than the core layer is put into the tube 1, and the uncovered end of the material 2 is supported with a holding arm 4 connected to a movable support section 6. By lowering the sections 5, 6 simultaneously and perpendicularly, the tube 1 and the material 2 are fed into the core tube 11 of a heating furnace 10, and they are melted by heating and unitedly spun at a prescribed drawing speed in succession to manufacture an optical fiber 3 coated with a high silicate glass layer.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To form an optical fiber bundle having superior transmission characteristics, by using high silicic acid glass having a low softening temperature and excellent workability for the sheath layer of an optical thin rod and a bundling glass pipe in the manufacture of an optical fiber bundle by bundling many optical thin rods in one body. CONSTITUTION:Around an optical fiber consisting of a core 21 and a cladding material 22, a sheath layer 1 of high silicic acid glass (e.g. Vycor glass) having a lower softening point than quartz glass and excellent workability is provided to form an optical thin rod 3. Into a bundling glass pipe 31 made of silicic acid glass of the same material with the said sheath layer 1, optical thin pipes 3 are arrayed and inserted, and then made solid by being heated by a heating means (e.g. oxyhydrogen burner) 32 moving in its lengthwise direction to be made one body, thus obtaining an optical thin rod bundle which does not contain any air bubble.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make the observation of high temp. objects easy and sure by inserting a rod lens of a quartz material and bundled fibers in a cylindrical tube of a quartz material, and adjusting their position then fixing these to the tube. CONSTITUTION:A rod lens 1 of a quartz material and bundle fibers 2 of a quartz material are inserted into a cylindrical tube 3 of a quartz material, and the position of an image pickup optical system 10 is adjusted by selecting the distance L in such a way that the image by the lens 1 is formed on the end faces of the fibers 2. Upon ending of this adjustment the lens 1 and the fibers 2 are fixed to the tube 3 by heating the outsie circumference of the tube 3, then the observation of the high temp. objects in a furnace or the like is accomplished easily and surely.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily bind an optical fiber flux for image transmission, consisting of silica compound glass, with high accuracy, by means of high-frequency induction heating. CONSTITUTION:A beltlike fiber aggregate is formed, by winding it up to an array drum, applying an adhesive agent thinly on a prescribed part, binding it temporarily and after that, cutting it off, it is piled on a forming jig 4 made of graphite, whose section is recessed, is stored, on which a cover body 5 made of graphite is placed, and pressure is put in the direction as indicated with an arrow A. A high- frequency induction coil 6 is placed in the outside circumference of the forming jig 4 containing the cover body 5, high frequency power is applied, and when induction heating is executed to a high temperature, end parts of the optical fiber flux are heated, are made to adhere to each other, and are formed in one body. In order to prevent thermal oxidation of the forming jig, it is executed in the atmosphere of inert gas such as gaseous nitrogen, etx. This method is especially suitable for manufacture of a heat resistance optical fiber flux for observing a high heating part, etc. of various high heating apparatuses, etc.
