Abstract: Fibre-reinforced materials for seals, friction bearings etc. Two- or three-dimensional shaped prods. (I) comprising several layers of textile sheet (A) have a fibre content of 30 - 70 wt.%, at least 30 wt.% of which consists of partly or completely aromatic polyamide or polyester fibres, or polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres, and contain a thermoset resin (B) with up to 25 wt.% added fluoropolymer. Also claimed are (i) A process for the prodn. of (I) by hot-press moulding several layers of prepreg made from (A) and (B), and (ii) 2- or 3-dimensional structural elements obtd. by machining prods. (I), esp. gaiter seals and gaskets, friction bearings and bearing bushes, bearing shells and cages.

Abstract: Fibre-reinforced material made from a web-shaped textile material and a thermosetting resin, having a fibre content of 30-70 wt.% and in which the fibres present are at least 30% synthetic fibres. Pref. the textile material may be e.g. a woven, non-woven or knitted fabric and pref. comprises a staple fibre yarn. The textile material consists of up to 100% synthetic fibres, esp. high strength polyacrylonitrile fibres. The thermosetting resin is pref. a phenolic resin, esp. a phenol-formaldehye condensate with a mol. ratio phenol:formaldehyde of 1:1 ro 1:2, and opt. contains substances acting as plasticiser and adhesion promoter, esp. a polyvinyalcohol deriv., and partic. polyvinylbutyral. The thermosetting resin may also contain up to 25% of a fluoropolymer, esp. a fluoropolymer with a melt viscosity at 380 deg.C or 10 power 2 to 10 power 5 Pa.s and an average particle size of 0.5-10 micrometres.
