Abstract: Optical waveguides (I) with polymer core and sheath are claimed, with refractive index ratio core/sheath = nK/nK - above 1.01; in type (Ia) the core polymer (II) is polycarbonate or a polymer contg. units of styrene, substd. styrene, (meth)acrylate or fluoroacrylate, and the sheath polymer (III) contains 0.1-100 wt.% monomer units of formula (IIIA), (IIIB) and/or (IIIC); alternatively, (Ib) the sheath is a fluoropolymer and the core is polymer (III) as above; or (Ic) both core and sheath consists of a polymer (III). Also claimed is a thermoplastic polymer of formula (IV), with degree of polymerisation = 5-10,000. R1-R4 = H, D, F or 1-10C perfluoroalkyl; R5, R6 = H, D or F (in equatorial or axial position); R7, R8 - H, D, F or 1-10C perfluoroalkyl; 1 = 1-3; m = 1-4; x, y, z = 0-1; x + y + z = 1. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I) by extruding the polymer core and coating it with a polymer sheath. Specifically, in type (Ib), the sheath is a fluoropolymer contg. 10-100 wt.% units of VDF, TFE, HFP, fluorovinyl ether, alkyl (esp. fluoroalkyl) methacrylate or alpha-fluoroacrylate, or fluorodioxole; pref. core and sheath are produced by simultaneous co-extrusion. USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention provides polymeric optical fibres based on new, highly transparent, readily extrudable thermoplastic polymers which can be used for long periods at 100-150 deg.C. without adversely affecting transparency, i.e. with no significant redn. in transmission length or increase in attenuation; polymers (IV) also have good mechanical properties, very good oxidn. stability, high temp. resistance and high weathering resistance.

Abstract: Optical fibre comprises a core of transparent fluorine-free polymer (I) and a sheath of transparent fluoro-polymer (II), and with relative refractive index difference (nI-nII)/nI of at least 2%, in which (I) is essentially a MMA polymer or a polycarbonate, and (II) contains monomer units derived from a cpd. of formula H2C=CF-CO-O-C(CF3)2-X where X=H or D. The fibre is mfd. by drawing a fibre of (I) through a soln. of (II) in a non-aq. organic solvent in which (I) is insol., and then removing the solvent. Pref. solvent is a lower alkanol or acetate, or a lower ketone, which is removed by evapn. at 30-120 deg. C. (I) is, e.g., PMMA or Bisphenol A-polycarbonate with pref. refractive index 1.44-1.59. Pref. (II) has mol. wt. 10.000-200,000, Tg 100-145 deg. C, and refractive index 1.348-1.400; it is prepd. by reaction of alpha-fluoroacrylic acid with hexafluoroisopropanol or its deuterated analogue. Pref. solvent is MeOH, acetone, or EtOAc.

Abstract: An optical waveguide having a core/sheath structure whose sheath comprises a polysiloxane or a terpolymer based on vinylidene fluoride, tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene is suitable for transmission paths of ca. 10 to 100 m and can also be used at a temperature above 100 DEG C. without significant reduction of the transmission path.
