Abstract: 1,116,394. Detecting pulses. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. 6 Oct., 1965 [4 Nov., 1964], No. 42493/65. Heading H3T. Pulses are detected by their effect on a stored electric charge which is periodically set to a definite value and subsequently sensed, the input pulses being applied at a frequency lower than that of the alternate setting and sensing of the charge. In the Figure, a rotating magnet 10 generates sinusoidal oscillations in coils 14, 14 1 which are anti-phase and are fed respectively to two identical detecting circuits 8, 8 1 . The half-cycle in which the top of the coil is negative drives current through diode 20 and transformer primary 36P, inducing a voltage in the secondary 36S which charges capacitor 34 through diode 32. In the next half-cycle current flows through diode 18, base-emitter path of transistor 24, resistor 50 and diode 42, the latter short-circuiting the transformer primary to prevent any signal appearing at the secondary. Transistor 24 then conducts and capacitor 34 discharges through transistor 24, the baseemitter path of transistor 46, resistor 52 and transformer secondary 36S. Transistor 46 then conducts and a signal appears on the output line 56. The current through the winding 36S induces a voltage in winding 36P which passes current through resistor 50, emitter-base junction of transistor 24, diode 18 and coil 14. Transistor 24 is thus maintained conducting until capacitor 34 has discharged completely. If the pulse generator 26 produces a signal between the above two half-cycles, this is applied through diode 27 to transistor 24 and discharges the capacitor prematurely so that the output signal at 56 occurs before the second half-cycle in coil 14. An identical circuit 8 1 is supplied with anti-phase sinusoidal signals from coil 14 1 but in-phase pulses from generator 26 through diode 27 1 . The output of circuit 8 1 is delayed by a half-period at 62 so that signals will coincide on lines 56 and 60 only if no pulse has been suppllied by the generator. This coincidence is sensed by AND-gate 58 and detector 66. Provided that the frequency of the pulse generator is not greater than that of rotation of the magnet 12, simultaneous turning- on of transistor 24 by both inputs will not result in loss of detection of the pulse since this cannot occur in both circuits 8 and 8 1 . If the frequency of the pulse generator is lower than that of rotation of the magnet, a signal should appear at 66 at least every few cycles. Failure of this indicates mal-functioning of the circuit which thus has a " fail-safe " feature. If the pulses from the generator 26 are sufficiently short, the angle between the coils 14 and 14 1 may be less than 180 degrees. The generator 26 may be a piezo-crystal or magnetic pick-up.

Abstract: 1287799 Voice frequency receivers INTER. NATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 13 Nov 1969 [16 Dec 1968] 55563/69 Heading H4R [Also in Division G4] In order to increase the response time of a high Q mechanically resonant tuned circuit in a VF receiver of a data transmission system, the input to the circuit is attenuated as soon as the output of the circuit reaches a predetermined threshold. By this means the guard interval required between VF data pulses is reduced since the decay period of the signal in the tuned circuit is considerably reduced relative to the decay period of a signal having unlimited amplitude. As shown, a signal at input 1 is applied via F.E.T. 2 to a piezo electric transducer 5 on one arm of a tuning fork 7. A similar transducer 9 on the fork's other arm is capacitively coupled via an amplifier 13 to a threshold detector 15 whose integrated and amplified output is applied to a flip-flop 23 and also to the gate of F.E.T. 2 so as to cut the latter off. The cessation of output signal on lead 20, 25 causes F.E.T. 2 to reconduct. The restoration of output signal again cuts off F.E.T. 2. This oscillation continues for the duration of the VF signal thus maintaining the amplitude of the signal in the tuned circuit at a desired level. When the VF signal ceases, the flip-flop is restored by the zero signal detector, rectifier-filter 27 and inverter 29. A plurality of such circuits may be connected in parallel for responding to a multifrequency input, e.g. one frequency from each of two sets of frequencies. With the latter arrangement the common input signal is initially subjected to AGC and a common zero signal detector is used for restoring all the flipflops. In an alternative arrangement the output of the flip-flop is used to operate the attenuator. In this case the output of the circuit falls continuously and does not oscillator about a predetermined level. The flip-flop however will still not alter its condition until the input signal ceases and circuit 27, 29 becomes effective.

Abstract: 1,254,230. Automatic exchange systems; voice frequency signalling. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 11 Dec., 1969 [15 Jan., 1969],No. 60451/69. Headings H4K and H4R. In a system for transmitting alpha-numeric characters over a telephone system, each character is transmitted in the form of two tones transmitted in series and within the duration of a third transmitted tone. The system described can be used for transmitting punch card data to a central punch. The Specification refers to prior art system which transmit characters as three simultaneously transmitted tones each selected from a group of four tones and states that additional frequencies (e.g. bent frequencies) generated during transmission over a telephone network cause errors. By employing transmission of only two tones at a time, one from each of two groups of four tones, the tone frequencies can be selected to avoid such errors and the tone present throughout the transmission of a character is longer than any simulated signal due to speech. As described, a keyboard sender has one key for each character. When a key is depressed it closes a bank of contacts. One contact pair enables one of four inputs on an oscillator causing it to generate a tone from one group, a second contact pairsimilarly enables a second oscillator to generate a tone of the second group and a third contact pair enables a timer which after a short interval operates a changeover switch to disconnect the second contact pair and to cause a fourth contact pair to enable a different input on second oscillator, causing the tone of that oscillator to change. The Figure shows a detector. Actuators 47 to 50 respond to tones of the first set giving outputs on corresponding lines 55 to 58 and actuators 67 to 70 similarly provide outputs on lines 75 to 78 in response to tones of the second set. OR gates 59 and 79 connected lines 55 to 58 and 75 to 78 to an AND gate arranged to respond while one tone of each set is present resetting bi-stables 81 to 84 and enabling a timer 66 which provides an output if its input is enabled for a predetermined time. Resetting of the bi-stables enables AND gates 90 and 85 to 88 such that one bi-stable is set corresponding to the detected tone of the second group. The timer times out while the second transmitted tone of the second group is being received and enables and gates 61 to 64, 91 to 94 and 95 to 98 to provide three simultaneous output (each a marking on one out of four lines) one for each tone of the character.
