Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system initialization or boot mechanism for a data processing system for facilitating system recovery and (or) self restoration. SOLUTION: An alternate boot record 310 is recorded in an end part on the physically opposite side of a master boot record 304 on a hard disk drive inside the data processing system. When the master boot record 304 or the alternate boot record 310 is used for system initialization, extension boot records 314 and 316 stored before respective logic sections are used for the section. In the case that the trial of initializing the data processing system by using the master boot record is a failure, the alternate boot record 310 is used so as to initialize the data processing system. Thus, the alternate boot record forms a part of an automatic recovery mechanism inside the data processing system.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select the display area of a display device in a data processing system by moving a line against a boundary in response to a 1st user input and fixing it in response to a 2nd user input. SOLUTION: When a user selects a size change option by using a remote control 106, it is confirmed that a display area is changed. The user sets a top edge of the display area there. After that, a right edge of the display area is set, a bottom edge of the display area is set and finally, a left edge of the display area is set by the user. For instance, when the user presses a 'change' button to change a display area, it starts a process that changes the display area which is formed by boundaries, moving it against the top edge. When a bar is approached to the top edge as much as possible in a screen to satisfy the user, the user presses, a 'next' button at that time and the top edge of a display is formed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple electronic time measuring device being a time cell together with a relevant method and system and a computer program product. SOLUTION: A time cell is provided with a program type insulating charge storage element for receiving a static charge through an insulating material, and the charge storage element loses a static charge through the insulating material according to the lapse of time. When the potential of the program type charge storage element is substantially lowered at an already known discharge rate, the potential of the program type charge storage element is observed at a prescribed point of time so that the elapsed time can be decided. Therefore, the time cell is allowed to measure the elapsed time without using any continuous power source. A certain type of cell, that is, a binary time cell is allowed to have the similar form as that of a non-volatile memory cell. It is possible to design or program the time cell so that a specific period to be measured can be selected.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately target an advertisement from a server to a client in a distributed data processing system. SOLUTION: Between sessions connecting a server 408 and a client 402, a data stream scanner 422 scans a data stream coming from an internet and generates browsing history information 424. Based on the browsing history information 424, an advertisement selector 426 selects an advertisement from a classified advertisement data base 420 or advertiser data base 421. An advertisement inserting device 430 inserts the selected advertisement into the data stream. A browser 404 of the client 402 receiving the data stream, to which the advertisement is inserted, displays the advertisement in a web page. Corresponding to the insertion of the selected advertisement into the data stream, the server 408 reduces the cost of online connection service.

The server 106 accesses a UPC/component number index 108 by using the received product ID to decide whether or not the product ID is valid and stores the registration information corresponding to the product in a consumer entry in a consumer registration database 112 when so. Further, the server 106 sends an access code or registration number 116 to the consumer and also transmits product information 117 regarding the product identified by the product ID to the consumer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To collect data on a traffic state by an improved method by identifying and transmitting a change existing between data on the traffic condition and present data. SOLUTION: In this method, traffic condition is reported to a center data base for automatically detecting and reporting the traffic conditions and permitting other users of a distributed vehicle computing system so use the states. Abstract: A method, system and computer program product to facilitate royalty collection with respect to online distribution of electronically published material over a computer network. In one embodiment, a method for managing use of a digital file (that includes content subject to copyright protection on behalf of some content provider) begins by establishing a count of a number of permitted copies of the digital file. In response to a given protocol, a copy of the digital file is then selectively transferred from a source to a target. Thus, for example, the source and target may be located on the same computer with the source being a disk storage device and the target being a rendering device (e.g., a printer, a display, a sound card or the like). The method logs an indication each time the digital file is transferred from the source to a target rendering device, and the count is decremented upon each transfer. When the count reaches a given value (e.g., zero), the file is destroyed or otherwise prevented from being transferred from the source device. The indications logged are transferred to a management server to facilitate payment of royalties to the content provider.
