A method and apparatus for a grid project throttle control for controlling the rate at which a grid job utilizes processor and network resources at the grid node. This throttling mechanism controls the rate of network and processor utilization based on a determination of the expected network and processor availability determined when a grid project is scheduled so that the grid project does not adversely affect the functioning of the nodes with regard to their regular, non-grid work.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for collecting royalties on the Internet as a result of use of copyrighted content. SOLUTION: A count of the number of permitted copies of the digital file is set for managing use of a digital file. In response to a given protocol, a copy of the digital file is then selectively transferred from a source to a target. Thus, for example, the source and target may be located on the same computer with the source being a disk storage device and the target being a rendering device. The method logs an indication each time the digital file is transferred from the source to a target rendering device, and the count is decremented upon each transfer. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method and a system for purchasing a discount product. SOLUTION: Concerning the method and the system for electronically processing product discount, the electronic data base of product discount is constructed. The electronic data base is connected to the network of a data processing system and can be accessed by the network of the data processing system. Therefore, the point of access from the outside of the network to the data base is provided to a client. The electronic data base is expanded so as to contain client information and a unique ID is applied to each of clients. Afterwards, the selection of a product by the client is linked to the unique ID of the client inside the data base in response to the entry by the client. Finally, discounting to the selected product is electronically applied inside the network.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and system for controlling the display device of a data processing system using first and second radio position controllers and a control base device. SOLUTION: A first radio position controller 101 is provided with an acoustic converter which transmits a first ultrasonic carrier signal to which an X-Y position control signal and/or an operation control signal generated by the first device are transferred. A second radio position controller 103 is provided with an acoustic converter which transmits a second ultrasonic carrier signal to which an X-Y position control signal and/or an operation control signal generated by the second device are transferred. The first and second ultrasonic carrier signals have different frequencies. A control base device is connected with a data processing system, and provided with a circuit which receives and discriminates the first and second ultrasonic carrier signals for generating a decoded display control signal. Then, a display controller is used for activating a display device. Thus, two users can simultaneously control the display device.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reporting the position if a commodity in a controlled environment. SOLUTION: An infrared (IR) light emitting diode (LED) is installed in the controlled environment and infrared light is projected. First of all, the projected infrared light is corrected so as to contain digitized commodity information and the position. The infrared light is broadcasted in a prescribed and a customer having an IR receiver can specify the position of the commodity.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute a telephone call to the operator of a web site without ending Internet connection by starting an IP telephone call to a called party from a client machine and billing prescribed charge to the service provider account of a user. SOLUTION: The plural client machines 42 accesse the Internet through an ISP1 44 which is prepared for providing call processing services. A server 45 includes a control routine 51 for controlling a switch 47 to designate the route of the received prescribed IP telephone call in a proper destination station in a telephone network where the live operator exists. Then the operator of the web site can execute a voice over IP telephone call without necessity to Interrupt present browsing session and charge is imposed on the ISP demand of the user.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To directly and automatically transfer image data from a digital camera to a computer or a server by providing an input/output adaptor or the like that sets up communication connection with a destination system via a network and can transmit image data to the destination system. SOLUTION: A digital camera 102 is provided with the input/output adaptor 216 that includes a data connector and a connector 217 that is used to transfer data with the camera via a data cable. In the case that the connection of the digital camera 102 to an external communication unit is detected, a microprocessor 208 executes a connection/data transfer routine 230 to set up communication connection via the Internet to a destination system. The communication connection is set up by using connection/data transfer data 282 including an IP address of the destination system, a sign-on script, a password and a transfer destination directory or the like.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize a necessary connection time and to maximize the number of subscribers which can be updated by compressing the page having the highest possibility of access to a page where a subscriber is absent and sending it to a subscriber. SOLUTION: User devices 102, 104, 106, and 108 have communication links 110, 112, 114, and 116 which enable access to a public switching network 118. The user devices 102, 104, 106, and 108 communicate with a server 12 through those communication links 102, 104, 106, and 108. The server 120 is connected to the public telephone switching network 118 by a communication link 122. The server 120 enables the user devices 102 to 108 to access the Internet 124 through a communication link 126. While the user devices 102 to 108 are enabled to access the Internet 124, the server 120 stores various constitution information, passwords, electronic mails, messages, and backup data in a storage device(SD) 128.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for manipulating molecules. SOLUTION: The system manipulates molecules by using a set of proximal probes such as those used in atomic force microscopes. An electrostatic pattern is arranged on a set of proximal probes such that each proximal probe may exert electrostatic force. The molecules are captured using those electrostatic force, and after that, the molecules can be manipulated during a state where the molecules are captured by the proximal probes. The electrostatic pattern can be modified such that the molecule moves or rotates over the set of proximal probes during the state where the molecules are captured by the set of proximal probes The electrostatic pattern can be used to bend or split the molecules during the state where the molecules are captured by the set of proximal probes, thereby it is possible for the system to bring the molecules in chemical reactions, e.g. to act as a synthetic catalyst or a synthetic enzyme. SOLUTION: The producer or the user of a Web page is enabled to setup an HTML tag which can selectively be activated by a selective control tag in a subsequent Web page in a Web page, which is displayed at present in order to operate the present Web page (61). The producer or the user of the original page is enabled to determine which subsequent Web page can activate the tag in an original page (62). Then, the user of the subsequent Web page can select which tag in the page, that is displayed at present, is to be activated for executing shift (63).
