    Abstract: A technique for establishing a logical path between two servers in a coor dinated timing network of processing environment is provided. The technique includes the exchange of command and response message pairs by a server and an attached server, via a physical link. The server transmits a command mess age to an attached server to establish a server-time-protocol(STP) logical p ath and receives a response from the attached server. The technique also inc ludes the server receiving a request transmitted by the attached server to e stablish an STP logical path to the server and transmitting a response to th e attached server s request. A logical path between the server and the attac hed server is established if the attached server s response indicates that t he server s request was accepted bythe attached server and if the server s r esponse indicates that the attached server s request was accepted by the ser ver.

    Abstract: Server time protocol (STP) messages and methods of exchange thereof are provided for facilitating synchronization of processing units of a timing network. The STP messages include exchange time parameters (XTP) commands and responses, and STP control (STC) commands and responses. XTP message exchange processing includes: generating an XTP message command at a first processing unit including a command transmit timestamp field set bythe first processing unit and a command receive timestamp field which is unset by the first processing unit; transmitting the XTP message command to a second processing unit; setting the command receive timestamp field in the XTP command with the time the XTP command is received at the second processing unit; and generating an XTP message response at the second processing unit, the message response including the command transmit timestamp set by the first processing unit and the command receive timestamp set by the second processing unit.

    Abstract: A state of an input/output (I/O) operation in an I/O processing system is determined. A request for performing the I/O operation is received from an I/O operating system at a channel subsystem and forwarded to a control unit controlling an I/O device for executing the I/O operation. After a predetermined amount of time passes without receiving indication from the control unit that the I/O operation is completed, an interrogation request is received at the channel subsystem from the I/O operating system for determining the state of the I/O operation. An interrogation command is sent from the channel subsystem to the control unit. A response is received from the control unit, the response indicates a state of the I/O device executing the I/O operation, a state of the control unit controlling the I/O device executing the I/O operation, and the state of the I/O operation being executed.
