    Abstract: Member (9) has a tension arm (13) over which ribbon (3) feeds. Biasing arm (17) presses member - (9) toward brake surface (7), with slot (21) moved until it encounters stud (23). At low tension of ribbon (3), brake surfaces (11) and (7) press and hold ribbon (3). As feed tension increases, tension arm - (13) forces member (9) back until stud (23) encounters the opposite end of slot (21), after which slightly higher force further opens the brake and arm (13) continues to provide feed tension. The mechanism is small, efficient, smooth functioning, and suited to incorporation as part of a ribbon cartridge.

    Abstract: In a printing machine having a removable ribbon cartridge, means are provided for conveniently loading and unloading said ribbon cartridge on a support plate. Said means include guide means within the cartridge which cooperate with complementary guide means within the support plate for guiding the cartridge while it is being dropped-in onto the support plate; and lever operated cam/cam-follower means for then shifting the cartridge on the support plate to its final locked position. The cartridge unloading is performed through a reverse lever operation followed by a cartridge pick-up.

    Abstract: In ribbon cartridges (10) including a ribbon take-up spool (20) which is peripherally driven by a spacially fixed driving roller (18), it is necessary for the take-up spool (20) to move away from the driving roller (18), as the ribbon (22) accumulates on the spool (20), while remaining in proper driving engagement with the roller (18). According to the invention, this is achieved by a frangible member (24) which resists the movement of the take-up spool axle (28) except when caused by ribbon accumulation. Frangible member (24) may either be formed as an integral part of the cartridge walls or be bonded thereto. Member (24) will break or tear as axle (28) is forced away from roller (18) by the increasing diameter of take-up spool (20).
