Abstract: VECTOR MAGNETIC INK JET PRINTER WITH STABILIZED JET STREAM A vector magnetic ink jet printer is arranged so that the ink droplets in the initial jet stream are alternately selected (i.e., magnetized) and unselected (unmagnetized). The interposition of unselected droplets between selected droplets prevents undesired magnetic interactions between selected droplets and gives them optimum spacing before they are deposited upon the recording surface, while at the same time keeping all of the droplets in sufficiently close proximity to give the stream aerodynamic stability. The gutter or catcher for unselected droplets is located between the second axial deflector (X deflector) and the recording surface. The magnetic field of the second deflector is specially shaped so that it can effectively control the trajectories of all selected droplets that have passed through the field of the first axial deflector (Y deflector), but without affecting the trajectories of unselected droplets aimed at the gutter. The selected and unselected droplets form separate substreams which have sufficient angular divergence in the X direction for enabling the unselected droplets to be guttered without excessively spreading their individual trajectories along that direction, since they are not affected by the X reflecting field, but the divergence is not great enough to disrupt the aerodynamic stabilizing action of each substream upon the other.

Abstract: A silicon body has an array of nozzles therein and a separate magnet for each nozzle integral with the body. The magnet is disposed adjacent the nozzle with which it cooperates so that it can apply a deflection, prior to break-up of the stream exiting from the nozzle into droplets, to selected portions of the stream. The droplets, which are formed from the selected portions having the magnetic deflection applied thereto from the magnet cooperating with the nozzle, deflect to a gutter and are not applied to a recording surface, which moves orthogonal to the nozzles. If desired, the winding of the magnet can have a second excitation frequency supplied thereto to break up the stream into droplets. The break-up of the stream into droplets also can be accomplished by vibrations produced by a piezoelectric transducer, for example.

Abstract: One or more magnetic fields having non-uniform gradients is periodically applied to a magnetic liquid stream, which is preferably isotropic and virtually free of remanence, to create perturbations in the stream so as to form droplets therefrom with substantially uniform spacing and of substantially uniform size. If more than one of the magnetic fields is applied, the maximum strength of each field is spaced an integral multiple wave length from the maximum strength of the adjacent magnetic field with each magnetic field having substantially the same maximum strength. The wave length of the perturbation is preferably between 4d and 8d where d is the diameter of the stream.

Abstract: A stream of magnetic ink droplets is directed towards a recording surface and initially passes through a selector, which selects the droplets for application to the recording surface to form characters thereon. Each of the selected droplets passes through first and second magnetic deflectors in which each of the selected droplets is deflected in directions orthogonal to each other and orthogonal to the direction in which the droplets are moving toward the recording surface. Each of the selected droplets is subjected to a magnetic field gradient varying with respect to time during the passage of the droplet through one or both of the magnetic fields depending on the desired position of the droplet on the recording surface relative to the prior droplet.

Abstract: An ink jet recording system including means for producing a stream of high speed ferrofluid ink droplets, magnetic deflection means for deflecting said ink stream, said magnetic deflecting means including two spaced pole pieces forming an air gap therebetween located so that said ink stream passes therethrough, said gap being shaped to form a gradient magnetic field therein, said gap further being shaped so that movement of said ink stream in a direction normal to the gradient magnetic field does not result in the ink stream striking a pole piece. Said system is further characterized by a plurality of magnetic deflection means located in the path of said ink stream wherein each deflecting means is capable of applying an increment of deflecting force to said stream.

Abstract: The present disclosure describes, in one embodiment, a scanner making use of a bubble plate for transfer of information. Circuits and structures are provided for populating, that is filling the bubble plate initially, feeding a document into close proximity with the plate, establishing a field bias relative to the document and plate which achieves an imaging effect of the information on the document into the bubble plate, thereafter moving the plate away from the document, feeding the document out, and shifting the information contained in the bubble plate to another device, such as a storage unit, or the like. Another embodiment utilizes drum members for the bubble and bias elements and this embodiment can be provided with a toner development adjunct. Such as adjunct could also be provided, if desired, in connection with the plate embodiment.
