Abstract: A conference server system, for internal use in the public switched telephon e network (PSTN), links to public data communication networks (e.g. the Internet) for distributing computer displayable data between participants in voice telephone conference s. The server system includes a computer sub-system for storing data generated by t he participants and distributing the data in coordination with voice presentati ons of respective participants. Data so stored and distributed includes computer-displayable d ata. Other data handled by the computer subsystem represents commands and functional re quests issued by participants which pertain to the handling of computer-displayable data and voice parameters of the conference. Conference participants, having separate and c oncurrent access to both the PSTN and the data network, receive and view computer-disp layable data prepared by one of the participants in coordination with the respective voice conference. The conference server system connects to voice conference manage mentresources of the PSTN in a manner enabling the serve r system to control voice parameters of a voice conference in response to data requests received from participants (e.g. requests from hearing-impaired participants for enhanced audio service ), as well as enabling the conference management resources to control functions performed in respect to distribution of displayable data in response to spoken requests uttered b y the participants, when the telephone system contains appropriate speech recognit ion equipment. Telephone system conferences utilizing the present conference ser ver system have the advantage of being usable to support voice-only and/or data-only pa rticipants (participants respectively linked to only the voice or data distribution par ts of a conference session), as well as to provide conference service between exactly two parti cipants which may be more effective than comparable services that the same two participant s would obtain using a direct dial-up telephone connection for voice and a public da ta network connection completely isolated from the voice conference management resource s of the PSTN to exchange data.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for coordinating a usage of a wireless transmission medium amongst a plurality of transmission units (12). The transmission medium is of a type that is utilized in accordance with a protocol having a transmission period that is comprised of a plurality of consecutively occurring transmission sub-periods. A method includes the following steps. A data structure (28a) is periodically circulated amongst the transmission units, the data structure being expressive of an identification of each of the transmission units and also expressive of an identification of an assigned transmission sub-period or sub-periods, if any, during which each of the transmission units is permitted to transmit on the wireless medium. The step of circulating includes the following steps: (a) receiving the data structure from a first transmission unit with a second transmission unit; (b) responsive to the receipt of the data structure at the second transmission unit processing the data structure in accordance with an amount, if any, of impending transmission activity to modify the assignments of sub-periods therein; and (c) transmitting the modified data structure to another one of the transmission units. A method of synchronizing the plurality of transmission units to a slotted transmission protocol is also disclosed.

Abstract: An apparatus and method in a tablet computer for disambiguating a handwriting input stream generated by a stylus-based user interface. A tablet application program interface (TAPI) of the present invention receives stroke data generated by a stroke made by a user on a digitizing tablet. The TAPI inserts the stroke data into a database. If the stroke is an editing gesture, the TAPI routes the stroke to a gesture recognizer which identifies an editing dialog. The TAPI then executes the dialog to perform operations on the database. If the application program is expecting text input, the TAPI continues to receive stroke data until it detects a closure event. The TAPI then forms a stroke group entry in the database by grouping all non-gesture stroke data received since the last closure event. The TAPI routes the stroke group data to a character recognizer, which returns candidate characters. The TAPI inserts the candidate characters into the stroke group entry. The TAPI notifies the application program each time it updates the database.

Abstract: This invention allows customers and other users of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to enable, disable or modify special services provided by the net work. The PSTN is defined here as all equipment world wide (land-based, radio or other ) enabling ordinary telephone users to connect to other telephone users, but exclu des private telephone networks such as "tie line" systems maintained or leased by pr ivate enterprises. Presently contemplated actions can be taken independent of the sta te of the customer's telephone line (e.g. on-hook or off-hook), and usually involve use of equipment other than telephones and communication networks other than the PSTN (e.g. compu ters operating through the Internet and pagers operating through pager networks). Th e special services include existing services (call waiting, call blocking, call forwarding , etc.) and new ones (e.g. transferring an active call from a desk phone to a mobile cellular on e without interrupting the call). Security firewalls, between the public and telephony ap plication intelligence (TAI) systems that administer customer services within the PSTN, en sure that actions by unauthorized individuals do not interfere with or adversely affect te lephone system operations. Authorized customers taking presently contemplated actions w ill not be able to adversely affect telephone system operations. The present system wil l work on information maintained at any level of an intelligent network hierarchy within t he PSTN, including service nodes through which customer services are traditionally provid ed.

Abstract: This invention is a power conserving method and apparatus for managing a computer memory. A first memory bank comprises normal RAM. A second memory bank comprises low-power RAM. More frequently used virtual pages are mapped onto the first memory bank while less frequently used virtual pages are mapped onto the second memory bank. Further power savings are achieved by removing power from the driver circuits of the memory controller for the second memory bank when the second memory bank is not being referenced.
