Abstract: The present invention concerns an apparatus for exchanging service information with other devices. The present apparatus comprises a transceiver, a processing unit, a memory for storing information about its local services and/or services provided by other devices, and a protocol resource manager. This protocol resource manager (a) triggers the transceiver to send service information, comprising information about itself and/or other known devices to other devices, (b) chooses a timeout value TA, (c) ensures that the apparatus listens for up to a maximum time TA for service information received by said transceiver, (d) if TA timed out without having received such service information by said transceiver, triggers said transceiver to repeat step a, (e) if such service information was received by said transceiver prior to TA timing out, checks whether said service information received comprises information about itself; and (f) if yes, then chooses another timeout value TA, and continuing with step c, (g) if no, then continues with step a.

Abstract: This invention concerns methods for the protection of resources in an open digital communication system, which resources are residing in or owned by physically and organizationally distributed, independent entities connected through that system, e.g. the Internet. Since, in such an open system, any entity can in principle access any resource of any other entity, precautions must be taken to avoid or minimize the danger of resource corruption and destruction, to maintain privacy and, where necessary, confidentiality. Thus, protection of resources is of ultimate importance to warrant integrity and function of an entity. For the intelligent protection of such resources, in particular against unauthorized access, a variable-grained control of the name space (consisting of all names an entity provides) and/or the provision of attachable and detachable guards accompanying each call for a file and/or service is provided.

Abstract: Scheme and apparatus for distinguishing services offered by a serviceproviding device in adjacency of the apparatus from services offered by a service-providing device not being in the apparatus' adjacency. All devices - including the apparatus - are part of a wireless local network. The apparatus maintains a record with information about services and associated identifiers as well as a list of identifiers about the service-providing devices. The associated identifiers and the list of identifiers are compared to determine an associated service as being in adjacency of the apparatus if it is rendered by a service-providing device being listed in the list of identifiers. An associated service is determined as not being in adjacency of the apparatus if it is rendered by a service-providing device not being listed in the list of identifiers. The apparatus comprises a network interface for wireless communication with the service-providing devices, and a service discovery module which maintains the record with information services and associated identifiers.

Abstract: A notebook computer contains in addition to the normal motherboard an additional self-contained low-power unit, such as an embedded PDA. With such a notebook computer there are two modes of operation possible, a high-power mode and a low-power mode. In order to make use of the embedded PDA, files, such as word processor documents, presentations and so forth are made available to the PDA. In accordance with the present invention this is done by establishing a set of working files. This may be done based on their modification date and it may depends on the requirements of the user as well as on the available resources of the embedded PDA.
