    Abstract: In a magnetic disk file having a plurality of disks and a source of organic lubricant mounted within a housing, an air flow stream recirculates within the housing. The vapor pressure of the lubricant source is controlled to provide vapor phase transport of lubricant molecules between the source and the disks' recording surfaces. The lubricant molecules bidirectionally transfer between the air stream and the source, and between the air stream and the surface of the disks, as is needed to maintian a nomo-molecular lubricant film, in the range of about 3 to 15 angstroms, on the disks in accordance with the principle of Langmuir kinetics. The disks are rigid disks and their recording surface includes a carbon overcoat. This overcoat has an affinity for the airborne organic lubricant molecules. In a first embodiment, the vapor pressure of the lubricant is controlled by mounting the material at the coolest location within the housing. In a second embodiment, the lubricant is carried as a mono-molecular layer of lubricant on granular carbon particles which have a surface area that is many times greater than the surface area of the disks. In a third embodiment, the vapor pressure is controlled by combining the lubricant with a vapor pressure diluent.

    Abstract: A rotating magnetic storage device is shown wherein the transducer and media are separated during operation by a thin film of low viscosity liquid lubricant that is recirculated from a reservoir within the head-media enclosure. Lubricant recirculation can be effected by capillary action using a wick, mechanical pumping and metering or distillation techniques. As compared to devices using air bearing separation, the transducer carrying slider has very small bearing surfaces which may be in the form of narrow rails or small depending foot elements. This enables fly heights of 2 microinches using a film of one micron thickness.

    Abstract: A disk drive having a passive slider exhibiting two fly heights, one for recording and reading operations and a second for idling, is disclosed. The disk drive has a magnetic recording surface set for rotation in a direction. A transducer carrier is radially positionable relative to the magnetic recording surface and can be moved between recording portions and idling portions of the annular surface. In the idling zone the surface includes a plurality of shallow depressions (84,86) disposed in an annular zone. The depressions are generally trench like. The orientation of the depressions depends on the type carrier for the transducer. If oriented transversely to the direction of rotation of the magnetic recording surface, they will boost pressure under the carrier increasing or introducing spacing between the body and the carrier. Where the carrier has an air bearing surface including regions creating zones of relatively negative pressure, the depressions are grooves paralleling the direction of rotation of the disk. The grooves diminish the effectiveness of the zones of negative pressure to increase carrier fly height.

    Abstract: The disk drive assembly has a disk assembly and a transducer carrying actuator which are surrounded by a housing and a lubricant film is maintained on the recording surfaces of the disk. A lubricant reservoir is positioned close to the disk recording surface, and a heater element is mounted in heat transfer relationship with the reservoir. A sensor determines the thickness of the lubricant film on the disk recording surface. A controller governs the power delivered to the heating element w.r.t. the lubricant film thickness determined by the sensor. A recirculating device captures lubricant that collects within the housing and returns it to the lubricant reservoir. The recirculator includes a wick structure that extends from a housing location where lubricant collects to the reservoir. The reservoir is planar and overlies the disk data surface with a separation not exceeding 500 microns.
