Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a disk drive enclosure structure where a special form whose draft is zero is used in a die casting process. CONSTITUTION: A data storage disk drive 10 includes a spindle, which supports plural disks on the surface of a magnetic disk which are rotated around a common shaft and form a spindle assembly 18, and a rotary actuator which supports plural magnetic transducers on the surface of each disk. The disk drive includes a die cast disk drive enclosure structure 12 including the surface to which a spindle motor shaft and an actuator bearing shaft are set and where a predeterminate draft is zero. The enclosure structure includes a base cast member 14, which holds an electric connector arranged on the outside, and a cover cast member 16. The disk drive includes an electric passage from a flexible circuit to a comb-shaped part of the actuator. The disk drive includes a tubular chemical air filter arranged in a groove for diffusion integrated with the cover as one body.

Abstract: A coil assembly for disk drive components is presented which includes a coil winding free of lubricants that cause stiction problems during the operation of the disk drive assembly. An actuator coil and spindle motor winding are disclosed which include a conductor, an insulating layer over the conductor, a bond coat overlying the insulating layer, and a lubricant coating on the insulating layer. The lubricant coating is a hydrocarbon based oil having a molecular weight within ranges that will not volatilize and condense on the surface of the disks in the drive.

Abstract: The drive includes a data disc, a motor connected to the disc for rotating the latter, a transducer for reading the data from or writing the data to the disc, a carrier for supporting the transducer near a surface of the disc, an actuator connected to the carrier for moving the carrier and supported transducer across surface of the disc. The drive also incorporates an enclosure surrounding the motor and actuator and fitted with a breather opening, a filter housing located within the enclosure and having a passage, which has an inlet near to the breather opening and an outlet. A chemical filter is supported by the housing and located near the passage outlet for removing chemical contaminations from air entering the enclosure through the breather opening.

Abstract: A chemical filter assembly (24) mounted in a breather opening in a housing for a magnetic storage device (10) or other device to permit pressure equalization with the surrounding environment comprises at least one filter medium (32) for removing particulate matter, and a unitary filter medium (34A) of a fabric of activated carbon fibres that is impregnated with a chemical that in combination with the carbon provides protection against both organic and inorganic gaseous or vapor pollutants, said fibres having a pore size small enough prevent significant penetration by aqueous solutions so that during impregnation the pores will not become clogged with the chemical.
