    Abstract: A local computer 132 is connected to a remote computer 136 over a network for collaborative processing, whereby changes to the screen of the local computer are to be reflected on the screen of the remote computer. A hook routine 110 is used to intercept requests to update the screen of the local computer, and the area of the screen to be updated is determined from the request. Another routine then obtains the bit map for the area of the screen which has been updated, and only this bit map is transmitted to the remote computer, rather than one corresponding to the whole screen.

    Abstract: In a data processing system having connected devices, device drivers and device adapters, a device adapter is elected to be the controlling adapter. Requests to a device or devices are transparently routed via the controlling adapter. If a controlling adapter fails, the or one of the remaining device adapters is elected to be the replacement controlling adapter. Requests can continue to be serviced via the replacement controlling adapter, and requests that were in progress at the time of the failure can be reissued for service via the replacement controlling adapter.

    Abstract: A system and method are provided for processing data representing stored images so that a set of such stored images can be represented simultaneously on an output medium having a specified output area in such a way that more effective use of the output area is made than previously possible with prior art techniques. Typically the set of stored images to be represented will result from an image database search and the output area will be a display screen (80) of a monitor. The system of the present invention includes a divider (40) for dividing the output area of the display screen into a number of regions dependent on the number of stored images retrieved by said database, and an assignment device (50) then associates those stored images with an associated one of the created regions. Once this has been done a scaling device (60) is employed to scale each stored image associated with a display region so that, when those images are displayed on the display screen (80) of the monitor, they will occupy a selected area within the associated region of the display screen. Using this technique a set of images can be displayed on a display screen simultaneously in a way that allows the whole output area to be utilized, irrespective of the number of stored images in the set.

    Abstract: A computer workstation runs an application 12 which generates data for transmission over a network. The workstation includes a communications subsystem 14 which is responsible for actually sending data generated by the application onto the network. The application therefore passes data 22 for sending to the communications subsystem, along with the identification 24 of the channel over which that data is to be sent, and compression information 26. In a first embodiment the communications subsystem contains a variety of compression routines 40, and the compression information indicates which of these routines is most appropriate for the data in question. In a second embodiment, the compression information is a callback function, whereby the communications subsystem can call back to the application program to perform the compression itself.
