Abstract: Nickel plating baths include as brightening agent ascorbic acid or isoascorbic acid. Saccharin may be present in permalloy platings which include Ni and Fe, Co, Ca, and Por selected combinations thereof with Ni. The ascorbic acid acts as anti-oxidant in Ni/Fe platings preventing the formation of FeIII. The Ni salt may be sulphate, chloride, or sulfamate. Preferably a Ni anode is used to replenish Ni ions, and iron is added to the electrolyte as a salt. Suitable substrates are copper or its alloys, gold, silver, platinum, stainless steel or other metals, or non-conductors such as glass, ceramic or plastics which have been made conductive by coating with copper or gold.

Abstract: A method of electroplating as cathode an elongated substrate 12 such as a plastic dielectric web 14 having a thin conductive film coating 13 which may be formed by chemical plating comprises passing the substrate through the bath and applying a plating current between it and an anode at a point such that due to the resistivity of the substrate the current density at the surface of the substrate decrease from a value exceeding the limiting current density for the material (IL) being deposited, i.e. the current density at which all the plating ions brought to the cathode are discharged or reduced to a lower valence state, to a value less than this as the substrate passes through the bath, the curve 20 representing the plating current. As described, the method is applied to depositing magnetic Ni-Co alloy or Co films from acid baths containing sodium hypophosphite and ammonium chloride on to a dielectric resin web coated with an electroless Ni film containing 2-12% phosphorus.

Abstract: A magnetic Co film is electrolessly deposited on a substrate (e.g. of glass, ceramics, plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate, or of metal) from an aqueous solution of a Co salt, a hypophosphite such as sodium hypophosphite and a material which produces malonate ion in solution. A predetermined coercivity can be obtained by appropriately selecting the concentration of the malonate ion. The Co salt may be a chloride, sulphate, acetate or sulphamate, and the malonate may be malonic acid. The solution may contain the ammonium ion added e.g. as (NH4)2 SO4 and NH4OH. The pH is maintained at 8 to 11 by adding hydroxides, e.g. NH4OH, and ammonium salts such as (NH4)2SO4 or NH4Cl. The substrate may be a tape drum or disc. In an example a polyethylene terephthalate web is mechanically roughened, chemically etched and then sensitized by exposure to a Sn Cl2 solution and then to a Pd Cl2 solution with a water rinse after each exposure. The sensitized web, at this time having Pd on its surface, is then electrolessly coated with the Co. The coating bath may comprise:- .cobaltous ion.3.75 - 15.0 grams/litre .hypophosphite ion.3.0 - 24.5 grams/litre .malonate ion.15.0 - 200.0 grams/litre .ammonium ion.1.0 - 100.0 grams/litre
