    Abstract: A photo-cathode electron source suitable for use in flat panel displays has an extractor grid means (104) maintained, in use, at a positive potential with respect to the photo-cathode surface. The extractor grid may be used as a carrier for unfired photoemissive material which forms the emission surface of the photo-cathode. The material is deposited on the surface (103) of the photo-cathode means (102) by means of evaporation from the extractor grid (104).

    Abstract: A multi layer liquid crystal display cell 100 comprises compartments 114 and 116 separated by a thin transparent dielectric membrane 106 which is supported between substrates 102 and 104 by spacers 108 and 110. Guest-host type liquid crystal mixtures having dielectric anisotropy are contained in compartments 114 and 116. An electric field may be applied across the two compartments by way of conducting electrodes 118 and 120. The electro-optic characteristics of the mixture in compartment 114 differ from those of the mixture in compartment 116 in such a way that the liquid crystal molecules in the former compartment will switch orientation at a first value of the applied electric field and those of the latter compartment will switch at a second (different) value of the applied electric field (fig. 5). A third compartment may be added to the cell.

A photodetector (230) detects interruption of the beam by an article positioned in the plane. The scanner (260) comprises a shutter having a linear array of addressable, electrically actuable shutter elements. Each element is operable to transmit or block light from the light source (210) under the control of a corresponding electrical signal. Because the light beam is scanned by a shutter rather than a mechanical scanner, the device is advantageously more reliable than conventional electromechanical optical input devices.

    Abstract: An electron source comprises a cathode means, and an extractor grid used to extract electrons from the cathode. The extractor grid is formed by etching a plurality of apertures in the material. A plurality of spacing members for spacing the extractor grid at a constant, predetermined spacing from the cathode are used. Each of the spacing members is formed by etching around a substantial portion of the periphery of the aperture and folding a remaining portion of the periphery of the aperture at substantially a right angle to the planar material.

The device has a plurality of display elctrodes and a counter electrode in contact with a first electrolyte of a primary redox system. The counter electrode is charged to a predetermined potential. A secondary redox system is associated with the primary redox system. A secondary electrode in the secondary redox system is electrically connected to the counter electrode to maintain the charge on the counter electrode at a predetermined potential.
