Abstract: Creating hyperlinks in a document is performed according to structural indicators within a set of documents. The documents are parsed for at least one structural indicator, preferably of a type of structural indicator which is likely to be present in the type of documents being parsed. Each time a structural indicator is found in a document, text proximate to, and possibly including, the structural indicator is converted to a hyperlink. In one preferred embodiment, each structural indicator is associated with its own rule for creating the hyperlink. The invention also resolves the terminus of the hyperlink as a target document, e.g., a web page on the World Wide Web. The web page may be one of the documents newly hyperlinked as the set of hyperlinked documents are stored in a directory in a web server connected to the Internet. The target document may be resolved by retrieving a set of candidate documents related in subject matter to the hyperlinks. Each hyperlink is resolved by matching the text which occurs in the hyperlink to text which occurs in selected fields of a set of candidate target documents, e.g., a title field.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer implemented instructions in a data processing system for managing power consumption for a battery in the data processing system. An input identifying an amount of time required for running the data processing system is received. Responsive to the input, the available power in the data processing system is determined. An amount o f power usage within the data processing system required to run the data processing system for th e amount of time is identified using the available power if possible. The data processing system is set to the identified amount of power usage.

Abstract: In converting data between different protocols in which fields may take on a credit/debit indication, two attributes are employed, one associated with account type and the other associated with transaction type, which are interpreted to insure proper signage. For financial protocols such as OFX and Gold, an abstract account type is assigned to accounts as appropriate and employed, together with the existing transaction type, to determine how sign values (positive vs. negative) for a data element in a particular transaction should be altered, if at all, to be consistent between the two financial protocols. The method of determining signage should permit recreation of the original sign if necessary for error analysis. In one embodiment, an abstract account type/transaction type logic table 220 for the method of determining appropriate sign values may permit only reversal or preservation of a current sign value during conversion between protocols. The invention may be extended to conversion between any two protocols which convey values which may be either positive or negative by specifying parameters determining proper signage and defining a rigorous model of sign manipulation.

Abstract: For transmitting text data to MIDI devices. Text data is received (502), encoded to generate a plurality of MIDI events not including a standard MIDI text event (504), and the generated MIDI events are transmitted (506). In one embodiment, the encoding includes selecting a standard type of MIDI event and generating a plurality of MIDI events of the selected type that encode the text data, the generated MIDI events being overrun events that have no effect on a musical output. In another embodiment, the encoding includes selecting a non-standard type of MIDI event and generating a plurality of MIDI events of the selected type that encode text data. Standard MIDI text events include copyright notices, sequence/track names, instrument names, lyrics, markers or cue points. It may be public text, or private text that can't be decoded by musical instruments and the presence of which can't be detected.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a printer control system of the type which comprises, means for receiving sets of print data, each set representing a line of characters to be printed, printing means for performing printing operations in order to print each line of characters on a print medium in accordance with the corresponding set of print data, print data analysing means for analysing each set of data so as to generate print instructions for the printing means, and moving means for moving the printing means a predetermined amount relative to the print medium between successive printing operations in order to print successive lines of characters. According to the invention the printer control system is characterised in that the print data analysing means detects, in any set of print data, data representing a character which is too large to be printed in one printing operation, and the moving means is responsive to the detection of such large character data to move the printing means relative to the print medium a selected distance less than the predetermined distance in order for the printing means to be able to complete the printing of the larger character by an additional printing operation before starting to print the next line of characters.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a printer of the type comprising means for receiving sets of print data each representing a line of text and/or graphics characters to be printed on a print medium, detecting means for detecting, at the beginning of each set of print data, codes representing text spaces, and for detecting in each set of print data codes representing text or graphics characters, a print head for performing print operations on the print medium in accordance with said sets of print data, means for moving the print head relative to the print medium, and a control system, responsive the output of the detecting means after receipt of a set of print data, for moving the print head past the positions for printing the text spaces and into the correct position for printing the text or graphics character corresponding to the first of the character codes. According to the invention the printer is characterised in that the detecting means detects, at the beginning of each set of print data, codes representing blank graphics characters, and comprises means for converting the blank graphics character codes into codes representing text spaces, whereby the control system, on detecting the converted codes, moves the print head past the positions for printing the blank graphics characters into the correct position for printing the character corresponding to the first of the character codes.
