Abstract: APPARATUS FOR HANDLING FLEXIBLE SHEET MATERIAL OF DIFFERENT SIZES A low inertia rotary drum supports sheets of paper of different sizes for transport and processing. The drum has a plurality of leading edge ports formed in its surface along the length of the drum. A vacuum is selectively applied to one or more of the ports in accordance with the dimension of the paper in the direction of the length of the drum. The drum has a plurality of sets of trailing edge ports formed in its surface with each of the sets being disposed a predetermined arcuate distance from the set of leading edge ports in accordance with the other dimension of the paper. Each set of trailing edge ports has the ports arranged longitudinally along the drum and parallel to the set of leading edge ports. Only one set of trailing edge ports extends for the same length as the set of the leading edge ports. One of the sets of the trailing edge ports has a vacuum applied thereto with the same number of ports of the trailing edge set having the vacuum applied thereto as the number of the leading edge ports.

Abstract: 1375747 Electro-photographic printing apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Nov 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 53123/72 Heading G2H Toner remaining on electro-photographic surface 7 after transfer of a developed image is removed by an electrically biased magnetic brush 4, after the electrostatic image has been erased by light 23, and is returned to developing apparatus 1 for re-use by electrically biased magnetic brush 2. For example the toner may be returned by being attached to the surface 7 when the apparatus if not producting prints, and corotron 22, (which usually assists transfer) gives the surface a charge which attracts toner from the brush 4. Alternatively the apparatus may be made to attach bands of returned toner to the surface 7, between positions formerly occupied by images to be developed, or toner return may be carried out by separate end portions of brush 4 and surface 7, or by auger conveyors operating independently of development. Preferably the developing apparatus 1 contains magnetic carrier particles with tetrafluorethylene coats, which give a positive charge to the toner, and the cleaning apparatus 3 contains magnetic carrier particles coated with ethyl cellulose, which places a negative charge on the toner.

Abstract: Improved development of electrostatic images having features such as broad solid fill, continuous tone or low contrast is obtained by a two step process involving overdevelopment followed by selective cleaning. The overdevelopment is accomplished through the use of a development electrode that is either grounded or is biased to a polarity opposite to the polarity of the electrostatic image so as to enhance the deposition of toner onto the electrostatic image by creating an erected, uni-directional development field. This development field places toner uniformly on solid areas, proportionally on gray areas, in large amounts on low contrast image areas and also generally on background areas. The thus overdeveloped image is removed from the development field thereby establishing a bi-directional imaging clearing field that is directed toward desired image areas and away from background areas. A selective cleaning system such as a cascade of electrostatically attractive particles, is passed over the overdeveloped image in the presence of the image clearing field to selectively remove toner from background areas without equally removing toner from the image areas.
