    Abstract: The present case concerns several systems for cleaning a photoconductor of residual toner at a cleaning station and recirculating the toner to a developer station in a copier machine. One embodiment contemplates a fairly continuous accumulation of residual toner in the cleaning unit and a periodic recirculation of the toner to the developer unit. Another embodiment makes use of a cleaning station for performing cleaning of toner from an imaging portion of a photoconductor drum member and concurrent conveyance of residual toner from the cleaning station back to the developer station by another portion of the photoconductor. In still another version, recirculation is performed by augers. In some cases, recirculation is initiated by counter means operative after a predetermined number of cycles.

    Abstract: A toner concentration control system for an electrostatic copier wherein light is alternately reflected from multicomponent developer material containing toner and from a calibrated reflector to a photosensor. An imbalance of toner in the developer material results in a difference in reflected light intensity from the developer and reflector which is converted into an electrical signal having an AC component. A phase sensing circuit detects the position of the peak of the AC signal component with reference to the position of the calibrated reflector and provides a control signal to a toner replenishing device. Developer flow past the photosensor is intermittently halted during concentration sensing to reduce noise effects. A plurality of selectable calibrated reflectors provide different concentration settings. Additional concentration settings are obtained by varying the light spectrum emitted by the light source.

    Abstract: 1375747 Electro-photographic printing apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Nov 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 53123/72 Heading G2H Toner remaining on electro-photographic surface 7 after transfer of a developed image is removed by an electrically biased magnetic brush 4, after the electrostatic image has been erased by light 23, and is returned to developing apparatus 1 for re-use by electrically biased magnetic brush 2. For example the toner may be returned by being attached to the surface 7 when the apparatus if not producting prints, and corotron 22, (which usually assists transfer) gives the surface a charge which attracts toner from the brush 4. Alternatively the apparatus may be made to attach bands of returned toner to the surface 7, between positions formerly occupied by images to be developed, or toner return may be carried out by separate end portions of brush 4 and surface 7, or by auger conveyors operating independently of development. Preferably the developing apparatus 1 contains magnetic carrier particles with tetrafluorethylene coats, which give a positive charge to the toner, and the cleaning apparatus 3 contains magnetic carrier particles coated with ethyl cellulose, which places a negative charge on the toner.
