Abstract: Methods, computer program products and systems for operating an applicatio n screensaver on a computer system. A screensaver activation condition is stor ed for one or more application programs on the computer. The screensaver is activat ed to overlay the client area of a running application window in response to detecting a screensaver activation condition for that application program. A screensaver process or image may be deactivated in response to no longer detecting the occurrenc e of the stored screensaver activation condition for that application. A screensaver activation condition may be a period of inactivity with the application program. A glob al desktop, screensaver property may also be stored and include global desktop screensaver activation and deactivation conditions, which are used to activa te and deactivate a global desktop screensaver process that overlays application program windows. Optionally, application program screensavers may be deactivated in response to deactivation of the global desktop screensaver.

Abstract: A user of a remote computer accesses a target computer (e.g., the user's home PC) via the Internet. To initiate the protocol, the user launches an application which, via the Internet, sends a special request to the user's home e-mail address. If the home computer is not currently connected to the Internet, the user's Internet Service Provider (ISP) dials a telephone number for the home computer. The home computer automatically answers, and the ISP sends authentication information to the computer to establish an Internet connection. With the connection established, an IP address is sent back to the user, which can then be used to invoke X-10 functions, telnet sessions, or other activities with the target computer.

Abstract: A method, in which, whenever a user or program running on a data processing system 106 requests a data item from the network, that data item is compared to a list of data items that the user of the machine is authorized or is not authorized to retrieve. Such a list of files for which the user is or is not authorized, an access control list, is distributed from one data processing system to another in the preferred embodiment by means of a secure mobile storage device, such as a smart card 124. In addition to verifying through the access control list stored on the secure mobile storage device that the user of the system requesting a file is authorized to access that file, the system can verify that the user of the secure mobile storage device is the authorized user of the secure mobile storage device by requiring the user to submit identification data such as a password or hand print scan. Further, the user can store web browser configuration and usage history data on the secure mobile storage device. Such data could include the configuration of browser preferences for the user, bookmarks, or a complete history of all sites visited. The system may be used for parental or employer control of the web.

Abstract: An internet browser can download and process sets of bookmarks, which may be created according to the needs of the user, e.g. "Home", "Office", shown, and may be password protected to create, use or modify. Only one bookmark set is "active" at a given time and user access may be restricted to only those URLs associated with the active set. A "blacklist" bookmark set can be created which contains prohibited URLs. The bookmarks can be automatically updated, e.g. with changes of URL. The bookmark sets have particular application in electronic commerce-related Web sites: a first web page related to a commercial transaction is retrieved by the browser, and parsed to locate an associated first bookmark set (consumer hot list), which is retrieved. This bookmark set contains URLs for Web pages which provide functions for the commercial transaction: preferably the set relates to a standard set of electronic commerce functions for the market segment to which the first Web page belongs, and appropriate URLs customise the set to the first page.

Abstract: A method, computer program and device for addressing electronic mail messages using a typical location is provided. The typical location could be a street address or GPS coordinates. The message can be limited in the time such that it can only be downloaded within a time span specified by the sender of the e-mail. The message can be addressed to a limited mumber of recipients and the sender can be informed about the number of recipients that have downloaded it. The message can furthermore be addressed to recipients with a certain range from a typical location.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for encoding transactions for goods and services using an e-receipt is provided. A consumer and a merchant conduct a commercial transaction using a distributed data processing system. An electronic receipt is recorded on a removable storage medium at a first data processing system. The electronic receipt contains data concerning the commercial transaction. The removable storage medium is then read at a second data processing system. After validating the electronic receipt, another commercial transaction or another stage of the original commercial transaction may be performed. The electronic receipt may be validated for a warranty claim on goods or services subject to the purchase transaction, and the removable storage medium may be an optical card or a smart card, either of which is able to store thousands of e-receipts and other electronic documents related to a commercial transaction, with the integrity of each guaranteed through digital signature, digital certificate, etc.

Abstract: A method for creating electronic receipts comprises creating a receipt 110 on a first computer, embedding the receipt in an E-Mail and transmitting it to a second computer where it is received 120 and processed by program and the data posted to a money manager program or file 180. The first computer preferably comprises a cash register interface connected to a bus which may have one or more cash registers and card readers attached. In a second embodiment the receipt may be created using a web enable form (Figs 5 and 7). The electronic receipt is preferably embedded as a MIME or S/MIME data type and preferably contains at least one of the following pieces of information; originator, destination Merchant ID, payee, payment method and tax information. The electronic receipt may be detected 135 by a plug-in on the second computer. Preferably, an acknowledgment E-Mail 145 will be sent by the second computer on receipt of the electronic receipt.
