Abstract: A memory device using at least one disk is disclosed the memory device uses a banded disk. The disk is optimally banded for use in a multiple frequency zoned disk storage device. The allocation of track locations into zones on the disk reduces the number of zone bit frequencies the storage device must handle when the disk is rotated at more than one discrete disk velocity.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for reading an information signal from a magnetic storage medium (24) using a magnetoresistive (MR) element (72), modifying the signal such that a thermal component of the signal representing a thermal response of the MR element (72) is degraded, and altering the modified signal to produce a restored thermal signal substantially representative of the thermal component of the signal read from the storage medium (24). The information signal induced in the MR element (72) is communicated from the MR element (72) to an arm electronics (AE) module (74) having a highpass filtering behavior. The AE module passes content of the information signal other than the thermal component content, thereby degrading the thermal component of the information signal. An inverse filter (76,88), implemented using an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter, receives the highpass filtered signal from the AE module (74) and produces a restored thermal signal substantially representative of the thermal component of the information signal. The inverse filter (76,88) has a response substantially inverse to that of the effective highpass filter of the AE module (74). A signal summing device (90) is coupled to the AE module (74) and the inverse filter (88) for receiving a restored thermal signal from the inverse filter (88) and a composite signal, including thermal and magnetic components, from the AE module (74) and substantially eliminates the thermal component of the composite signal, which otherwise distorts or modulates the composite signal.

Abstract: The invention increases the reliability of a data storage device. The data storage devices contain a memory element disk, containing data, the memory element disk being rotatably mounted about an axis, a transducer head, an actuator for moving the transducer head relative to the disk, and a counter for counting the number of seek operations performed by the transducer head. The invention may include setting a threshold seek value Tseek and comparing this value to the actual seek performed by the head, Vseek, to determine the need for a stop/start operation. Alternatively, the invention includes defining threshold seek operation count Tseek, counting the number of seek operations to determine Mseek since the last stop/start operation, recalling the total number of seek operations completed by the data storage device to define Nseek, defining Dseek by determining the difference between Nseek and Mseek, and determining whether Dseek is equal to or greater than Tseek. When Dseek is equal to or greater than Tseek, the transducer head undergoes a stop/start operation. Mseek may then be reset to equal Nseek before the stop/start operation is undertaken. When Dseek is less than Tseek the count is commenced. The invention may also be used with devices that additionally have auxiliary memory and with arrays of data storage devices.

Abstract: A system and method for editing program material provide viewers with real-time editing control. Digital program material are divided into relatively short segments and each of these segments are rated to indicate a level of potentially objectionable material contained therein. Each segment is tagged to indicate this rating. Prior to viewing the program material, or during playback of the program material, the viewer determines the rating level at which he or she wishes to view the program material. This rating level is entered into the playback system. Upon playback, the system examines the tag of each segment to determine whether that segment should be played. If a segment is tagged to indicate a rating with a higher level than that requested by the viewer, the tag is edited and not displayed. Thus, the program material is edited in real time as it is displayed to the viewer.

The storage medium is mounted in the storage device to allow relative movement between the MR head and the storage medium. The storage medium includes servo information provided to induce a thermal response in the MR head. A controller controls the relative movement between the MR head and the storage medium using the thermal response induced in the MR head.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for reading an information signal from a magnetic storage medium (24) using a magnetoresistive (MR) element (72), modifying the signal such that a thermal component of the signal representing a thermal response of the MR element (72) is degraded, and altering the modified signal to produce a restored thermal signal substantially representative of the thermal component of the signal read from the storage medium (24). A signal summing device (90) is coupled to the AE module (74) and the inverse filter (88) for receiving a restored thermal signal from the inverse filter (88) and a composite signal, including thermal and magnetic components, from the AE module (74) and substantially eliminates the thermal component of the composite signal, which otherwise distorts or modulates the composite signal.
