Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device improved for storing multi-media data. SOLUTION: The multi-media data are stored in a long spiral data track by a disk drive. The track on the reverse surface of the disk is formed to the spiral state in the opposite direction, consequently, the track on one surface is read out when an actuator is swept in, and the track on the reverse face is read out when the actuator is swept out. The compression interleaving part of the video expression such as a movie is stored in blocks on the spiral track. The blocks on the spiral track are read out by the drive at one time from the beginning to the end, and the data from these blocks are arranged to a set of buffers corresponding to the different short time intervals. A video signal is outputted from these buffers. By means of switching to the buffer having the appropriate expression of the optional short time interval, the access is carried out in accordance with the request.

Abstract: Storing data on a data processing system is done upon generation of a data file by displaying a user interface allowing user selection of storage criteria for the data file. Responsive to user selection of storage criteria for a file determining a physical format type for the file from a plurality of available physical format types. Then the file is stored on a direct access storage device as at least a first record conforming with the determined physical format type.

Abstract: A method for predicting and avoiding data errors by predicting disk drive read-write inhibit requirements in response to at least two parameters including a head position error and velocity with respect to the track centerline. A write or read inhibit signal is generated in response to selected combinations of these parameters to minimize soft read errors arising from track misregistration and to avoid hard errors arising from overwriting data recorded in an adjacent track. The read and write inhibit strategy is described as a pair of linguistic control rules suitable for implementation in a Fuzzy Logic Controller.

Abstract: A system and method for editing program material provide viewers with real-time editing control. Digital program material are divided into relatively short segments and each of these segments are rated to indicate a level of potentially objectionable material contained therein. Each segment is tagged to indicate this rating. Prior to viewing the program material, or during playback of the program material, the viewer determines the rating level at which he or she wishes to view the program material. This rating level is entered into the playback system. Upon playback, the system examines the tag of each segment to determine whether that segment should be played. If a segment is tagged to indicate a rating with a higher level than that requested by the viewer, the tag is edited and not displayed. Thus, the program material is edited in real time as it is displayed to the viewer.

Abstract: OPTIMUM ROTATIONAL MODE DECOUPLING SHOCK MOUNT CONFIGURATION FOR DASDS An apparatus and a method for decoupling external linear vibration from a device mounted in an enclosure, so as to reduce resulting rotational motion of the device. The apparatus comprises n vibration isolation mounts having characteristics and being positioned so that the center of stiffness and the center of damping coincide with the center of mass of the device. The invention may be applied to direct access storage devices having arbilrary mounting configurations where the geometry of the mounting configurations and/or the mass distribution of the head-disc assembly are not necessarily symmetrical. Alternatively, the damping and stiffness parameters may be isotropic in the plane of the device and the axes of the vibration isolation mounts may be disposed in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the device. The stiffness and damping constants may be equal for each mounting point and the mounting points may be located so as to be symmetric with respect to each other in the plane of the device. The center of stiffness and the center of mass may also be at the same point along an axis perpendicular to the plane of the device. A balancing mass may be applied to the device to change its center of mass to coincide with the center of stiffness. For a given mass and inertia distribution, isolation mountsare designed to be disposed in polygonally shaped configurations so as to satisfy critical equations, so that complete rigid body mode decoupling occurs. With an assumption that the mount stiffness and damping are to be identical for all mounts, the geometry of the locations arc simplified to have symmetries that result in regular polygons such as an isosceles triangle, a trapezoid, a square, a rectangle, etc. YO991-202

The storage medium includes servo information provided to induce a thermal response in the MR head. A controller controls the relative movement between the MR head and the storage medium using the thermal response induced in the MR head.
