Abstract: During decoding and encoding, the starting disparity of a current block is computed by using a disparity at some previous reference point and disparity characteristics of bytes from the reference point to a current block boundary. The characteristics of the bytes are whether the bytes are unbalanced coded vectors and whether the number of unbalanced vectors is even or odd. Alternately, the characteristics of the bytes are whether the bytes are balanced and how many balanced coded vectors exist. New classifications are created for encoding and decoding 3B/4B and 5B/6B transmission codes. Separate functions are created that address specifically disparity aspects. A dispartiy violation at the front of a byte is detected during decoding by comparing a required front-end disparity of the byte with the actual running disparity by assuming the actual running disparity is equivalent to an exit disparity of the next preceding byte that is disparity dependent.

Abstract: METHOD AND MEANS OF PREDISTORTING DIGITAL SIGNALS A method and means for transmitting a bifrequency or biphase encoded binary data waveform over a transmission line in a way to minimize distortion is disclosed. Distortion is minimized by predistorting the transmitted waveform to substantially reduce the frequency content of the signal which results in less phase shift error per unit distance. One way in which this is accomplished is by reducing the amplitude of half waves of signals exceeding a predetermined interval of time to thereby reduce the low frequency content of the transmitted signal.

Abstract: A binary-coded signal timing recovery circuit in which an input binary-coded signal is amplitude limited and then applied directly to the clock terminal of a first-edge-triggered, D-type flip-flop which is triggered by polarity transitions of the input signal immediately to set the output of the flip-flop to a maximum level having the polarity of a clock signal derived from a voltage controlled oscillator. The clock signal polarity at the time the flip-flop is triggered immediately indicates whether the input signal timing is early or late relative to the clock signal. A low pass filter averages the output of the flip-flop to provide a control voltage to the oscillator to adjust the frequency thereof and bring the clock signal into synchronism with the input signal. A second-edge-triggered, D-type flip-flop is triggered by the polarity transitions of the clock signal so that the output level of the second flip-flop has the same polarity as that of the input signal at the time the second flip-flop is triggered. The output of the second flip-flop represents the reconstructed or recovered binary-coded signal.

Abstract: A BYTE ORIENTED DC BALANCED (0,4) 8B/10B PARTITIONED BLOCK TRANSMISSION CODE A binary DC balanced code and an encoder circuit for effecting same is described, which translates an 8 bit byte of information into 10 binary digits for transmission over electromagnetic or optical transmission lines subject to timing and low frequency constraints. The significance of this code is that it combines a low circuit count for implementation with excellent performance near the theoretical limits, when measured with the commonly accepted criteria. The 8B/10B coder is partitioned into a 5B/6B plus a 3B/4B coder. The input code points are assigned to the output code points so the number of bit changes required for translation is minimized and can be grouped into a few classes.
