Abstract: A system and method for billing one or more participating parties for client access to the internet is disclosed including the steps of identifying at least one of the one or more participating parties as being responsible for the billing, allocating a share of the billing to each responsible participating party based on a predetermined function and computing a billing amount for each of the responsible participating parties based on a function of the share and a client bandwidth usage.

Abstract: In a system including a collection of cooperating cache servers, such as pro xy cache servers, a request can be forwarded to a cooperating cache server if the requested object cannot be found locally. An overload condition is detected if for example, due to reference skew, some objects are in high demand by all the clients and the cache serve rs that contain those hot objects become overloaded due to forwarded requests. In response, the load is balanced by shifting some or al l of the forwarded requests from an overloaded cache server to a less loaded one. Both centralized and distributed load balancing environments are described.

Abstract: Methods for processing information to be substantially unintelligible by a machine but understandable by a person include disguising information in the form of tex t and creating a graphical image file of the text. The text may be disguised before, during o r after the creation of the graphical image file. The text may be disguised by manipulating the characte rs of the text, such as by replacing characters of the text by other characters having a similar appearance or by words corresponding to the characters, or by adding obviously superfluous characte rs or words to the text, for example. The text may also be disguised by processing the graphical imag e file to provide a background to the text which has low contrast with respect to the text. An alpha-numeric or textured background may be provided, for example. The graphical image file may be par t of a Java Applet. Text may also be disguised through direct encoding in a Java Applet. It woul d be difficult or impossible for a machine to accurately capture the disguised information wit h a harvesting program, even if the program used optical character recognition. Information may also be disguised in the form of a dynamic media, such as audio or video. Creation of the audio or video file may be sufficient disguise; the information may be further disguised, as well. The audio or video file may also be part of a Java Applet. Once again, it would be difficult or impossib le for a machine to accurately capture such information. The invention is particularly suited fo r disguising personal information on a communications network, such as an e-mail address on a web page stored on the World Wide Web. Computer readable media storing the media file, software executable to disguise the information, web sites including the disguised information and servers storing the disguised information, are also disclosed.

Abstract: Systems and methods for collaborative web caching among geographically distributed cache servers, particularly, latency-sensitive hashing systems and methods for collaborative web caching among geographically distributed proxy caches. Network latency delays as well as proxy load conditions are taking into consideration during hashing. As a result, requests can be hashed into geographically closer proxy caches if the load conditions permit. Otherwise, requests will be hashed into geographically distant proxy caches to better balance the load among the caches.

Abstract: A method and system for manipulating or modifying identifiable objects in a standard broadcast or Internet-based multimedia stream according to a control specification and a content specification. Viewers and/or organizations can independently specify acceptable levels of content on multiple dimensions to satisfy the content specification while minimizing the filtering or blocking to the viewers. A fuzz ball control specification is provided for masking some portion of a video frame. Several fuzz ball specifications can be overlaid to address multidimensional content specifications or rating systems. The manipulation of the multimedia stream can take place at the client (set-top box or computer), intermediate node, the content server or a combination thereof. Proxy servers can modify content specifications for outgoing requests, enabling organizations to specify intranet-wide policies. Multicasting can be supported by using a single stream delivered to multiple clients, each modifying the video using a different specification. The specification to facilitate modification can be done at different granularity levels: the video, a group of frames, or individual frame level and can also be time-based. various protocols can be used to provide the content and/or control specification, including the VBI of a standard broadcast, PICS, RTSP and MPEG protocols.

Abstract: A video on demand computer system includes a plurality of storage media each storing a plurality of videos. The storage media are disks attached to a computer system. The computer system plays the videos on demand by reading out the videos from the disks as data steams to play selected ones of the videos for users responsive to received user performance requests. The computer system is programmed to monitor the numbers of videos being performed for each of the disks. Based on the monitoring function performed by the computer system, the computer system performs a load balancing function by transferring the performance of a video in progress from one of the disks to another disk having a copy of the video in progress. The computer system periodically performs a reassignment function to transfer videos between the disks to optimize load balancing based on the user performance requests for each of the videos. There are two phases to the load balancing performed by the computer system; a static phase and a dynamic phase. In the static phase, videos are assigned to memory and disks, and in the dynamic phase there is provided a scheme for playing videos with minimal and balanced loads on the disks. The static phase supports the dynamic phase which insures optimal real-time operation of the system. Dynamic phase load balancing is accomplished by a process of baton passing.

Abstract: A system and method for performing variable speed scanning or browsing, wherein a user controls the playout speed of a movie, which does not require additional disk or network bandwidth resources. In a preferred embodiment, the method provides for scanning operations for an MPEG video stream. The method satisfies the constraints of the MPEG decoder (in the users set-top box) and require a minimum of additional system resources. The embodiments of the present invention include (a) a storage method, (b1) a segment sampling method, (b2) a segment placement method, and (c) a playout method, where (b1) and (b2) are two alternatives for segment selection. Thus, two sets of solutions are provided to support vriable speed scanning in a disk-array-based video server: One using (a), (b1) and (c), and the other using (a), (b2) and (c).
