Abstract: Hydroxyl free deposition with high efficiency and at a high deposition rate may be achieved, even with use of relatively inexpensive raw materials, by utilizing a ring-shaped plasma activated axial chemical vapor deposition obtaining 100% chemical conversion and fractional volatilization of impurities. The plasma (2) is induced in an annular stream of a plasma-forming gaseous medium, and the reactant or reactants used in the axial chemical vapor deposition are introduced into the center of the ring-shaped plasma (2) to be converted by the heat of the plasma flame into glass precursor particulate which is deposited on a bait 4.An annular stream of a cooling medium flows outwardly past the plasma flame and is circumferentially centered by an extension (19) of the outer tubular element (9) of a plasma torch (1) in which the plasma is generated. An RF generator (18) which induces the plasma is operated at a frequency exceeding 20 MHz to give the plasma flame the desired ring-shaped configuration.

Abstract: A metallic material coating is applied to the external surface of a freshly drawn optical fiber while such surface is still pristine by passing the optical fiber through a body of liquid metal-organic material which forms a layer on the fiber, and by subsequently removing all non-metallic components from the layer of metal-organic material by volatilizing the same. The optical fiber with the layer metal-organic material is passed through a baking oven in which at least the layer is heated to a baking temperature at which organic materials present in the metal-organic material are volatilized and the remainder is baked to the fiber. Then, at least the layer is fired in a firing chamber at a higher temperature at which the metal-organic material is decomposed into its volatile non-metallic and non-volatile metallic components, the latter remaining in the layer and the former becoming volatile and leaving the layer. Preferably, at least one layer of synthetic plastic material is applied over the thus obtained metallic layer. When the firing is done in an inert or reducing atomsphere, the metallic material is in its elemental form, while it is in its metal-oxide form when the firing operation is accomplished in an oxidizing atmosphere. Various printing inks and/or resinates may be used as the starting metal-organic materials in the process according to the invention.

Abstract: In order to provide a high power heat source having a very clean and invariable heat flux, a ring plasma (31) is induced in a heating zone of a plasma torch including a plurality of coaxial tubular elements (45, 46, 47, 54) and the optical fiber (22) is drawn through a channel (54) passing axially through the center of the plasma torch and of the ring-shaped plasma (31). In this manner the preform (21) from which the fiber (22) is drawn can be placed in close proximity to the induced plasma without exposure to non-symmetrical temperature variations. Cooling gas passes through the heating zone either in an annular stream surrounding the plasma or in an annular stream passing through the center of the plasma around the preform and the fiber being drawn, or both. The heating zone is protected from environmental disturbances by an extension (52) of the outer tubular element (45) of the plasma torch which surrounds the heating zone. The plasma is induced by an RF source (33) in an undisturbed stream of a plasma-forming gaseous medium, such as argon or a mixture of argon with oxygen, which flows through the heating zone.
