Abstract: A wireless network provides controlled wireless communications with multi-mo de wireless WTRUs (33, 37). The wireless network has at least one base station (25) having a transceiver operating in an infrastructure communication mode withmulti mode WTRUs and a controller that transmits control signals via infrastructure communications with a WTRU that control peer-to-peer mode communications (40) of that WTRU with other WTRUs. A WTRU has transceiver components configured for selective operation in an infrastructure communication mode with a network base station and in a peer-to-peer communication mode with other WTRUs. The WTRU also has a transceiver controller configured to selectively control peer-to-peer mode communication s with other WTRUs based on communication signals received in infrastructure communications with a network base station. Preferably, the transceiver controller is configured to control the transceiver components to switch between infrastructure communication mode and peer-to-peer communication mod e based on(duality of Service criteria).

Abstract: A system facilitates handover of a wireless transmit and receive unit (WTRU) between a cellular network and a wireless local area network (WLAN). The WLAN communicates with a cellular network. A location of the WTRU is determined. The coverage areas of the WLAN and cellular network are determined. The WTRU is informed of the existence of the WLAN when the WTRU approaches the coverage area of the WLAN. The WTRU is handed over from the cellular network to the WLAN when the WTRU is in the coverage area of the WLAN and vice versa.

PREFERABLY, A REQUEST FOR A PRE-DESIGNATED PREFFERED COMMUNICATION AREA LOCATION IS INITIATED BY A MOBILE UNIT TRANSMISSION AND RECEIVED BY A NETWORK (405) BASE STATION (406). THE MOBILE UNIT CAN BE EQUIPPED WITH A GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) TO DETERMINE THE MOBILE UNIT'S ESTIMATED LOCATION. Abstract: A mobile unit includes a handset and a removable storage module having a unique storage module identity, for storing information specific to a user, including an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Additional information regarding a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) and International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) which uniquely identifies the subscriber is also stored in the removable storage module. Upon successfully camping on a cell of a mobile network, the IP address is forwarded to an IP-based network capable of communicating with the mobile unit. In an alternate embodiment, the mobile unit has multi-network capabilities which allow it to communicate with an IP-based network and a cellular network at the same time. In another embodiment, existing cellular network services for the mobile unit having multi-network capabilities are routed through the IP-based network.
