    Abstract: 23 A spread spectrum communications system for use over a communication channel, including a transmitter-generic--chip-code generator (101), a transmitter-message-chip--code generator (102), an EXCLUSIVE-OR gate(103), a combiner (104), a transmitter (107), a receiver-generic--chip-code generator (121), a receiver-generic mixer (123), a generic-bandpass filter (125), a receiver--message-chip-code generator (122), a receiver-message mixer (124), a message-bandpass filter (126), and a synchronous detector (139). The transmitter-generic--chip-code generator (101) generates a generic-chip-code signal and the transmitter-message-chip-code generator (102) generates a message-chip-code signal. The EXCLUSIVE-OR gate (103) spread-spectrum process message data with the message-chip-code signal to generate a spread-spectrum signal. The transmitter (107) transmits the combined generic-chip-code signal and spread-spectrum signal, on a carrier signal (108) over the communications channel as a spread-spectrum-communications signal. The receiver-generic-chip-code generator (121) generates a replica of the generic-chip-code signal. The generic mixer (123) recovers the carrier signal from the spread--spectrum-communications signal. The receiver-message--chip-code generator (122) generates a replica of the message-chip-code signal. The receiver-message mixer (124) despreads the spread-spectrum-communications signal as a modulated-data signal. The tracking and acquisition circuit (121) uses the recovered carrier signal for synchronizing the replicas of the generic-chip-code signal to the recovered carrier signal. The synchronous detector (139) synchronously demodulates the modulated--data signal as received data.

    Abstract: A spread spectrum base station comprising an automatic gain control (AGC) circuit having an input configured to receive a received spread spectrum signal and gain control the received spread spectrum signal to produce a gain controlled signal; a correlation circuit having an input configured to receive the gain controlled signal and correlate the gain controlled signal with a code to produce a despread signal; a power measurement and comparator circuit configured to receive the despread signal and a control level of the AGC circuit and processing at least the despread signal and the control level to produce a processed signal and comparing the processed signal with a threshold to produce a comparison signal, the comparison signal used to produce a power command; and a multiplexer for multiplexing the power command with a signal for transmission over an antenna.

    Abstract: A spread spectrum code division multiple access (CDMA) receiver for receiving data from a spread spectrum CDMA transmitter in a same geographic region as covered by a cellular system, the cellular system communicating using a plurality of predetermined frequency bandwidths, is disclosed. The receiver is characterized by means (149, 140, 147, 141, 169, 161, 163, 330, 331, 332) for receiving a spread spectrum CDMA data signal from said CDMA transmitter, the CDMA data signal having a wide bandwidth overlaying said plurality of predetermined frequency bandwidths, means (143, 333) for notch filtering the received CDMA data signal at said plurality of predetermined frequency bandwidths, and means (145, 165, 334, 335) for recovering data from said notch filtered CDMA data signal. A method of receiving data is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A phased array spread spectrum system for maximizing signal strength of a spread-spectrum signal with multipath through the use of a first RF/IF section 21, a second RF/IF section 22, a first digital delay device 27, a second digital delay device 28, a first summer 29, a second summer 30, a despreader 31, a magnitude device 32, a shift register 33, and a comparator 34. The first RF/IF section 21 receives a plurality of spread-spectrum signals and the second RF/IF section 22 receives a plurality of phased versions of the plurality of spread-spectrum signals. The first and second digital delay devices 27, 28 delay the received plurality of spread-spectrum signals with respect to the plurality of phased versions of the plurality of spread-spectrum signals by a plurality of delays. The first and second summers 29, 30 combine the delayed spread-spectrum signals and the plurality of phased versions of the plurality of spread-spectrum signals as a plurality of combined signals. The despreader 31 despreads the plurality of combined signals as a plurality of despread signals. The magnitude device 32 generates a plurality of magnitude values from the plurality of despread signals. The shift register 33 stores a plurality of previous-magnitude values previously generated by the magnitude device 32 and a plurality of present magnitude values presently generated by the magnitude device 32. The comparator 34 compares the previous-magnitude values and the present-magnitude values and, responsive to the comparison, outputs a plurality of comparison signals. The first and second digital delay devices 27, 28 respond to the plurality of comparison signals by lengthening or shortening the plurality of delays.
