    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer soluble in an alkaline solution, by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and a diol and reacting a reaction mixture of these compounds and a compound selected from an alcohol, an amine and an acid anhydride which have at least one unsaturated bond. SOLUTION: One equivalent of a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride represented by formula I, wherein R1 is a tetravalent organic group, such as 1,2,3,4- cyclobutanetetracarboxylic acid, and 0.5 to 1.5 equivalent of a diol represented by formula II, wherein R2 is a divalent organic group, such as 2,2-bis(4- hydroxycyclohexyl)propane, are heated and reacted in a solvent such as propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate to produce a polymer represented by formula III, wherein R1 and R2 are as defined for formula I and II, respectively. Subsequently, into a reaction mixture containing the polymer, a compound selected from among an alcohol, an amine and an acid anhydride which have at least one unsaturated bond, such as 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, 4-amino-4'- methoxystilbene and maleic anhydride, respectively, is added and reacted as a capturing agent, to provide a desired polymer.
