    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emulsifier for emulsion polymerization used for producing a polymer emulsion which shows a low viscosity even when particles having a small particle size are contained and is also excellent in polymerization stability and mechanical stability, and to provide a method for producing the polymer emulsion. SOLUTION: The emulsifier for emulsion polymerization comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by formula (I) or formula (II), wherein R 1 and R 2 each represent a 6-32C monovalent hydrocarbon group; A 1 O and A 2 O each represent a 2-18C oxyalkylene group; m 1 , n 1 , m 2 , and n 2 each represent a number of 1-100; X 1 , Y 1 , X 2 , and Y 2 each represent H, a -SO 3 M group, a -CH 2 COOM group, or a -PO 3 M group, wherein M represents H or a cation group.     Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a highly efficient oil-water separating agent, by adding ethylene oxide to a polyhydric alcohol having a specified structure in the presence of a catalyst, and esterifying part of the terminal hydroxyl groups with a fatty acid. CONSTITUTION:An oil-water separating agent is composed of a compound, represented by the general formula, having an HLB value of 11-15. The oil-water separating agent having said composition is prepared as follows: ethylene oxide is added to a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycerol, tetritol, pentitol or sorbitol, in the presence of an acid or alkali catalyst, and then part of the terminal hydroxyl groups is esterified with a fatty acid so that a product includes at least one intact hydroxyl group. The fatty acid to be used includes one having 8-22 carbon atoms, e.g. lauric, stearic, tallow or coconut fatty acid. The obtained oil- water separating agent is added, as such or diluted with an organic solvent, e.g. toluene, to a crude oil emulsion at a rate of 0.001-0.05wt% in general.
