Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply producing a 5-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone in high yield at a low cost.
SOLUTION: The method for producing the 5-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone represented by formula (2) (m denotes an integer of 4-15) is carried out as follows. A raw material containing a polyester represented by formula (1) (wherein, m is an integer of 4-15; and n denotes an integer of ≥2) is brought into contact with an acid selected from sulfuric acid, sulfonic acids, an ion exchange resin having sulfonic acid residues and heteropoly acids and the polyester is thereby depolymerized. The depolymerization product is further subjected to an isomerization reaction.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic displaying different colors according to view angles, having stable color effect and useful as a makeup cosmetic such as lipstick, skin care cosmetic such as nourishing cream, hair cosmetic such as hair foam or the like by including specified sterol derivatives in a glassy state. SOLUTION: This cosmetic is obtained by including sterol derivatives (e.g. dicholesteryl brassylate) of the formula (R1 and R2 are each a natural sterol having one OH or a residue removed H from OH in the hydrogenated sterol; X is a 1-11C alkylene) in a vitrified state obtained by such a method as quenching in color developing state. The compound of the formula is preferably included at a ratio of 1-50 wt.% especially 2-40 wt.% based on the total composition. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting a compound of the formula R7OOC-X-COOR8 (R7 and R8 are each H or a 1-5C alkyl) or the like with sterols. The cosmetic is useful as eye shadow, body lotion or the like.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve appearance of a detergent and comfortability in use by incorporating a sterol derivative. SOLUTION: The objective detergent composition contains a sterol derivative represented by the formula. In the formula, R1 and R2 are the same or different, and are each a residue formed by removing a hydrogen atom from a hydroxyl group of a natural sterol having one hydroxyl group or a hydrogenated product thereof; (m) and (r) are each a number of 0-20; and X is a 1-40C divalent linear or branched saturated hydrocarbyl group, a 28C divalent hydrocarbyl group having an unsaturated bond or a 60C divalent hydrocarbyl group having a saturated cyclic structure. R1 and R2 are each preferably a residue formed by removing a hydrogen atom from the hydroxyl group of cholesterol, stigmasterol, lanosterol, ergosterol or citrosterol. The compounded amount of the sterol derivative in the detergent composition is preferably 0.01-3.0 wt.% based on the whole composition. Incorporation of the sterol derivative in a glass state into the detergent composition is preferable from the view point of stability.

This sterol derivative which is vitreous at room temperature, is usable as powder with fixed color development, producible using inexpensive raw materials, and useful as a colorant with excellent coloring effect, in particular e.g. a formulation ingredient for cosmetics. This compound of formula I is obtained by reaction of the corresponding sterol with a dicarboxylic acid (diester) of formula II (R3 is H or a 1-5C alkyl), a dicarboxylic acid anhydride of formula III or a dicarboxylic acid halide of formula IV (X is a halogen).

The shape of the cosmetic may be either of an aqueous cosmetic, a water-in-oil type or oil-in- water type emulsion cosmetic, and an oily cosmetic, and the kind of the cosmetic may be a skin cosmetic such as a pack, a foundation, a lotion or a skin cleanser or a hair cosmetic such as a shampoo, a treatment or a hair-dressing agent.
