    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve electromagnetic conversion characteristic and durability during high density recording by using a polyurethane based resin, which contains a specified amount of a high molecular weight component in a specified range of number average molecular weight and weight average molecular weight/number average molecular weight, as binder of a magnetic layer. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer on the surface of a magnetic recording medium employs a magnetic powder, a binder and a magnetic paint mainly composed of a solvent. The magnetic powder herein used is a combination of a ferromagnetic metal powder in which the ratio of the metal component is 70 wt.% or more while the ratio of iron is 60 wt.% of the total amount of the metal component and a hexagonal ferrite powder. The binder contains a polyurethane based resin in which the ratio of a high molecular weight component is 1 wt.% or less in terms of the member average molecular weight Mn of 1-5×10 , the weight average molecular weight Mw/Mn of 4 or less and the molecular weight of 1×10 . The employment of any numerical values outside these ranges of values worsens plane smoothness, strength, coating performance and dispersiveness, eventually lowering electromagnetic conversion characteristic and improving the durability and surface performance of the magnetic layer.
