The invention provides a container including a front panel (12) and a back panel (14) spaced from the front panel. The container also includes first and second side panels (16, 18) connecting the front and back panels. The container also includes at least one area of weakness (24) on at least one of the front back and side panels. The container also includes a wrapping material extending around a portion of the container deforming the at least one area of weakness (24) relative to the other of the panels. After wrapping, the container has a predetermined shape formed by deforming the area of weakness relative to the remainder of the container.

The subject invention relates to a vacuum wand assembly (10) for extracting a product (12) from a container (14), especially a non-self supporting container that collapses as the product is extracted. The assembly (10) includes a wand for extending into the container (14) and for withdrawing the product (12) therefrom. A vacuum source (18) is connected to the wand (16) for applying a vacuum to extract the product through the wand (16). A supporting structure (24) supports the wand (16) and is moveable relative to the container (14) for carrying the wand (16) as the product (12) is extracted from the container (14). The wand (16) is limited in a vertical direction by the supporting structure (24). This keeps the wand (16) at the pre-determined level relative to the product within the container (14).

A packaging system (20) for forming and filling a transportable container (22) of plurality of bulk goods includes a frame (26) having a bottom support (48) and an upper support (32). An upper turntable (34) is rotatably supported within the upper support (32) and a lower turntable (50) is rotatably supported on the bottom support (48). A drive system (58) includes at least one pulley system (62, 64, 66) interconnected to the upper and lower turntables (34, 50) for simultaneously driving and synchronizing rotation of the upper and lower turntables (34, 50) with the at least one pulley system (62, 64, 66). A slip frame former (42) extends downwardly from the upper turntable (34) and a roll of stretch wrap (92) is disposed in overlapping relationship with the slip frame former (42) and the bottom support (48) during simultaneous and synchronized rotation of the turntables (34, 50) with the at least one pulley system (62, 64, 66).

The invention provides a diameter reducing system for reducing the diameter of a flexible container as the container is filled. The system includes a shrinking device to shrink the container at the fill level as the container is filled with a plurality of particles. The shrinking device can include a heater to direct heat at the fill level. The container can be a bag formed from heat shrinkable material. Shrinking of the container at the fill level as the container fills promotes supporting engagement between particles.

A transportable container for bulk goods and a method for forming the container are disclosed. The transportable container is formed from a bag having a closed base and an open top. The open top is in a folded over position and a bottom support is located adjacent to the closed base. A particulate material is filled into the bag and an outer wrap is spirally wrapped around the bottom support and the bag such that the outer wrap secures the bag to the bottom support and secures the open top in the folded over position. The method for forming the transportable container includes the steps of securing the open top of the bag in an opened position and supporting a base of the bag. The bag is filled to a predetermined level with a particulate material and while being filled the fill level of the particulate material in the bag is monitored. Simultaneously with filling of the bag, an outer wrap is spirally wrapped around the bag in an upward direction to a predetermined fill level. Once the bag is completely filled the open top of the bag is released and moved into a folded over position whereupon the outer wrap is spirally wound around the bag in a downward direction to secure the open top in the folded over position thereby forming the transportable container.

The stretching device can release a stretched portion (22) of the container substantially at the fill level as the fill level rises. The container can be a flexible, elastic bag. Shrinking of the container at the fill level as the container fills promotes supporting engagement between particles to enhance the structural integrity of the filled container and to reduce the likelihood that particles will be damaged during movement of the filled container.
