Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the reduction of overhead by determining the value of retrieved data member by comparing the initial, roughly estimated data value of retrieved data member value with a fixed threshold value. SOLUTION: The threshold value is set by a threshold circuit 18. A comparator 24 has a 1st input 32 connected with the threshold circuit 18 and a 2nd input 34 freely operably connected with relevant pixels P1 -P8 . When the comparator 24 judges the initial roughly estimated value of each pixel element is larger than the fixed threshold value, it is determined each pixel element expresses a 1st data state. The comparator 24 outputs its determine signal. When the comparator 24 judges the initial roughly estimated value of each pixel element is smaller than the fixed threshold value, it is regarded each pixel element expresses a 2nd data state, and the comparator 24 outputs a signal showing the 2nd data state.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve and process data stored at a page unit memory device. SOLUTION: An embodiment form includes a data reception device 40 of a memory system and its method for processing information read from the storage of a holographic memory system or other page unit memory systems. A data device includes a multi-dimensional array that is constituted of a picture element 42 consisting of a picture element detector 46 and a corresponding picture element circuit 48. The picture element detector 46 detects information such as light information for indicating data being stored at the memory system. The picture element circuit 48 determines a numeric value for indicating information that is detected by each picture element detector 46. Further, the device includes an active processing circuit 54 that is manufactured advantageously along with a picture element circuit for providing an additional 'on-chip' processing function including a processing between analog picture elements. A configuration with advantageous, additional processing improves a processing time, reduces the flow-out of non-processed data from the device, and reduces the space and post of a circuit design.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include a method (10) and apparatus (20) for determining values for data reproduced or retrieved from data storage media such as in holographic memory systems. The method includes approximating (12) the initial value of data members retrieved initially from the data storage medium of interest (by their intensity levels based on an absolute scale), using those approximations collectively to establish (14) one or more threshold levels for defining ranges for the data values to be determined, and determining values for the retrieved data members by comparing (16) the initial data value approximations of the retrieved data members to the established threshold levels. Alternatively, the threshold level(s) are set initially and adjusted iteratively based on the initial approximations of the individual data members until a final established threshold level is established. Advantageously, embodiments of the invention reduce data encoding overhead by using data members to establish comparative threshold levels for the determination of their intended values.
