Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cancel problems in operating speed by providing pump configuration for supplying an inputted optical signal to plural outputs more than one in response to a command signal for controlling the respective ON/OFF states of plural optical amplifiers. SOLUTION: An optical fiber line 201 respectively supplies the optical signal through an optical star coupler (coupler) 202 to a rare earth dope fiber optical amplifier (amplifier) 203 and an amplifier 205 with a prescribed wavelength or wavelength setting value. Besides, a pump 204 is connected to the amplifier 203 and a pump 206 is connected to the amplifier 205. Then, command/control information from command/control equipment 214 is supplied to a pump selector circuit 213 and while using the command/control information together with information from the other network element of optical system, it is selected whether the pump 204 or the pump 206 is to be selected. According to the result, it is selected whether the amplifier 203 or the amplifier 205 is to be switched to ON and OFF.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To monitor a signal routing of a multiple wavelength optical network by allowing the system to be made up of an output difference element connecting to an inverting input, a noninverting input and a dithering element, a dither signal generator and a feedback element giving input of a signal relating to an output of the dithering element to the inverting input of the difference element. SOLUTION: An intensity modulator 2 is arranged in series with an optical carrier 4 modulated by an information signal. A differential amplifier circuit 7 has an inverting input, a noninverting input and an output connecting to an input of the intensity modulator 2 as a dither element and is made up of an adder 6 and an operational amplifier conditioner 8. A signal generator 10 generates a desired identifier tone and overhead information to be added to a modulation optical carrier. Furthermore, the signal generator 10 connects to the noninverting input of the differential amplifier 7. Furthermore, the feedback element is used to generate a signal relating to an output of the intensity modulator 2 based on a modulation index of the identifier tone.

Abstract: In accordance with the invention, an optical cross-connect switch includes an optical router for distributing multi-wavelength optical input signals, an optical combiner for supplying multi-wavelength signals at the output ports of the switch, and optical fibers for interconnecting the optical router and optical combiner. Selected interconnecting optical fibers include controllable wavelength-selective elements, such as magnetically controllable fiber gratings, which are capable of transmitting or reflecting individual channels within the multi-wavelength optical signals so that a selected channel of a particular wavelength can be routed from any of the input ports to any of the output ports of the switch.

Abstract: A loss-less, optical add/drop multiplexer according to the present invention includes a rare earth-doped fiber amplifier integrated with a wavelength-sel ective fiber path coupled between two directional optical transfer devices for sele ctively adding and dropping optical signals from a multi-wavelength signal, such as a wavelength division multiplexed optical signal. One or more fiber gratings a re disposed along the length of the rare earth-doped fiber amplifier or between segments of the rare earth-doped fiber so that at least one grating is used for reflecting each optical signal that is expected to be added to or dropped fr om the multi-wavelength optical signal. By using this configuration, appropriate amplification is provided to compensate for losses in the add, drop, and thr oughpaths.

Abstract: A Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) ring architecture includes central node which generates a plurality of continuous wave (unmodulated) optical wavelengths which are sent as a WDM signal over an optical facility to a plurality of access nodes of the system. At the access nodes, one or more of these unmodulated optical wavelengths are demultiplexed from the WDM signal received over the optical facility and modulated with the user's or customer's signals and then multiplexed to the WDM signal on the optical facility.

Abstract: A system and method are described for transporting a heterogeneous mix of traffic having one or more protocol formats and supplied by one or more user s or sub-networks in a communication network. Heterogeneous traffic is packaged into digital containers that are routed and processed in network nodes interconnecting the users or sub-networks. A digital container includes a frame structure comprising a header section and a payload section, wherein the header section includes information for routing the digital container and for identifying the type o f payload being carried. The payload section is capable of carrying one or more different types of traffic formatted according to one or more protocols, e.g., IP, ATM , etc. As such, traffic supplied by one user node may comprise ATM cells, another may comprise IP packets, and so on. Traffic from each of the user nodes is combined in digital containers at a network node for transport over a core transport network via other network nodes. Because processing and routing of digital containers occurs at the network node level, a digital container is therefore assembled or otherwise formed so that the payload contents only include traffic for user nodes serviced by the same network node. Processing of the individual payload remains a user o r sub- network responsibility while the less processor-intensive routing and processing of digital containers occurs at the network node level.

Abstract: A method is provided for verifying that optical signals are properly rout ed between inputs and outputs of an optical cross-connect according to the prescribed routing paths defined in the cross-connect map. More specifically, optical signals are independently tagged at the cross-connect input ports with connection verification messages containing identification information. Connection verification messages can include, among other information, a message identification, incoming and outgoing wavelength information, incoming and outgoing port information, a time stamp, user verification data, and so on. At the cross-connect output ports, the messages are retrieved (and optionally removed) from the optical signals so that the identification information from the retrieved messages can be compared to th e routing defined in the cross-connect map. If an optical signal is verified a s not being routed according to the prescribed connection defined in the cross- connect map, then remedial action, such as tearing down the connection, can be initiated. By applying the tag to the optical signal, cross-connections can be verified in cross-connect applications employing one optical signal (i.e., wavelength) a t each input and output port or applications employing a WDM signal having many optical channels ofdifferent wavelengths at each input and output port.
