In a lock-stitch machine the loop taker is selectively prevented from engaging the upper thread loop by deflecting the loop or needle by means of the feed dog. Basting stitches are thereby formed. In a zig-zag machine a projection 19 on he dog, or an attachment 20 therefore, deflects the needle or thread loop on the inoperative stroke of the dog unless the needle is laterally displaced. Alternatively in a straight, or zig zag machine the inoperative stroke of the dog may be lengthened so that an edge of the needle slot engages the needle or thread loop.

Abstract: 986,261. Sewing machines. MEFINA S. A. March 9,1964 [June 26,1963], No. 9794/64. Heading D1G. In a rotary hook sewing machine, a device adapted to effect the removal of the bobbin from the rotary hook is mounted on the machine head. As shown, a spindle 8 which journals a swinging gate 5 carrying the reciprocating needle bar 4, is hollow and receives in its lower end an extension of a finger 21. The latter may be drawn downwards manually, against the bias of a spring contained in spindle 8, to engage its split lower end 29 with the bore 18 or a bobbin 16 mounted in a vertical axis rotary hook 12. The bobbin rises with finger 21 when the latter is released. It is stated that the return spring would be omitted, that the control of the finger could be effected by means of a lever or any type of mechanical means, and that the finger could be replaced by a hook, a magnet, a suction disc or any device for extracting the bobbin.

A zig zag sewing machine is provided with a member adapted to prevent concatenation between the upper and lower threads at one side of needle displacement, whereby the spacing between stitches is a multiple of the normal stitch length. As shown, the left hand side of the needle-passing slot 8 in the throat plate 2 is provided with a tube 10 which the needle A penetrates in its left hand position, and on which the beak of the rotary hook 3 slides tangentially. It is stated that tube 10 may be replaced by a trough or a blade, and that the blade may be shiftable from an operative to an inoperative position.

Abstract: The case has the general shape of a bell open at its lower portion to receive the apparatus. The case has a handle on its upper surface for carrying the apparatus housed inside the case, this handle being provided with means coupling it directly to the apparatus and held on the case by elastic means. The handle of the case is U-shaped and has two bayonet connectors housed in respective arms of the U. The upper portion of the apparatus has apertures to receive the ends of the bayonet connectors, the handle having at least one manipulating member for the bayonet connectors.
