    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an aromatic amine useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of dyes, in high purity and yield industrially advantageously, by reacting an aniline derivative with a monochloroacetic acid derivative in the presence of an acid binder, in a specific aprotic polar solvent as a reaction medium. CONSTITUTION:An aniline derivative of formula I (X is H, halogen, lower alkyl group, etc,; Y is acyl or acyloxy group; R' is H, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl group, etc.) is reacted with a monochloroacetic acid derivative of formula II (R is lower alkyl group, etc.) in the presence of an acid binder, e.g. sodium or potassium carbonate, in an aprotic polar solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide, as a reaction medium, to give an aromatic amine of formula III with suppressed by-product formation of undesirable amines. USE:Coupling components for disperse dyes.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as dye intermediates readily and safely in high quality and purity, by partially oxidizing 1-nitroanthraquinone containing dinitro derivatives hydrogenated under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:1-Nitroanthraquinone containing dinitro anthraquinones or 1- amino-anthraquinone containing diaminoanthraquinones is hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. Pd supported on a carrier, and a base in water or its mixture with an organic solvent at 10-80 deg.C to give 1-amino-and diaminoanthrahydroquinone. After removing the catalyst, 1-amino-anthraquinone is added to the reaction mixture to oxidize soluble diaminoanthrahydroquinones partially into insoluble diaminoanthraquinones, which are eliminated. The reaction mixture is oxidized with an oxidizing agent to give the title compound.
