    Abstract: PURPOSE:To safely produce the title substance in a hygroscopic solvent having strong polarity by adding an azeotropic agent with water such as hydrocarbon, etc., to a system containing an organic phosphine oxide, an alkali metal salt of a phenol and water and subjecting to azeotropic dehydration. CONSTITUTION:A system containing a compound shown by the formula (R to R are 1-8C alkyl or phenyl), an alkali metal salt of a phenol (e.g. phenol or 2-naphthol) and water is blended with an azeotropic agent with water and subjected to azeotropic dehydration to produce the title substance in a short time and safely. 5-16C aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon or 6-10C aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. hexane or benzene) is preferably used as the azeotropic agent with water. The solvent distilled away is separated from water and returned to the distillation system. By the above-mentioned method, the title substance which is reacted with CO2 to give an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, a fine chemical intermediate is readily produced.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:Production of bisphenol is carried out in the presence of a water- immiscible organic solvent, a mixture of unreacted ketone, water and a solvent is obtained as a low-boiling substance distilled from the top of a distillation column from a solution sent from a reaction zone, the mixture is separated, an organic solvent phase is circulated and further the ketone in a water phase is distilled and recovered. CONSTITUTION:In producing bisphenol from phenol 2 and ketone 3 in the presence of an insoluble acidic catalyst, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a water-immiscible organic solvent 1 such as benzene, monochlorobenzene, etc., a solution 4 sent from a reaction zone is continuously taken out, introduced to a distillation column D1, a mixture comprising unreacted ketone, water and the water-immiscible organic solvent is obtained as a low-boiling substance 6 distilled from the top of the column, separated into an organic solvent phase 10 containing ketone and phenol and a water phase 7 by a solution separator S and the organic solvent phase 10 is circulated to the reaction system and reused. On the other hand the water phase 7 is sent to the distillation column D2, ketone 9 is recovered and separated from drain 8.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an aromatic polyester which can exhibit a thermotropic liquid crystal property and has higher decomposition temperature and melting point by cocondensing 2-hydroxy-3-biphenylcarboxylic acid with 4- hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:An alkali metal o-phenylphenolate is reacted with CO2 in a dimethylimidazolidinone solvent to obtain a 6-hydroxy-3-biphenylcarboxylic acid (A). Separately, 4,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid obtained by using 4-hydroxy carboxylic acid as a starting material is decondensed by decomposition to obtain 4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carboxylic acid (B). Component A is cocondensed with component B in a ratio of 99-50:1-50.
