Abstract: A method of handover in a cellular communication system 2 wherein the selection of a handover candidate cell 12, 14, 16, 18 for a subscriber device 20 is made at least partly in dependence on a network identity associated with the subscriber device 20. A comparison may be made between the network identity associated with the subscriber device 20 and a network identity associated with candidate handover cells 12, 14, 16, 18 and the selection of a handover cell may be at least partly based upon a match between the compared network identities. Thus, for example, a user terminal 20 that is able to operate in both 2G (e.g. GSM) and 3G (e.g. UMTS) systems will handover to an operator's own 2G system upon leaving the operator's 3G coverage area rather than handover to a competing 2G system.

Abstract: A method of allocating timeslots between uplink and downlink communication in a cellular communication system (10) is described. The method comprises: for consecutive time division multiple access, TDMA, frames comprising the timeslots, allocating a first selection of the timeslots to uplink communication in each of a plurality of cells (101,201) and allocating a second selection of the timeslots to downlink communiction in each of the plurality of cells (101,201); and, when the number of timeslots of each frame to be allocated to uplink communication rather than downlink is different for different cells (101,201), varying the allocation of at least some of the uplink and downlink timeslots in a random or pseudo-random sequence in each cell (101, 201).

Abstract: Mobile terminals send information about radio transmission conditions between them to a base station. The information may comprise lists of other mobile terminals with which radio communications are found to be satisfactory compiled at each mobile terminal. When a mobile terminal sends a request to a base station for connection to another terminal, it is ascertained at the base station whether radio propagation conditions will permit of their communicating directly, and a direct mode communication instruction is sent to both terminals. The use of direct mode reduces use of downlink base station resources.

Abstract: The invention relates to a system for generating billing information for a communication system comprising a packet control unit (215) that controls data packet communication over a wireless interface (211). The data packets are buffered in a buffer (217). A separate billing network element (219) collects billing information for the data packet communication. In accordance with the invention, the packet control unit (215) determines (307) that a packet data communication has terminated, for example due to a handover. In response, the packet control unit (215) generates (311) buffer information comprising information as to how much data is discarded in the buffer. The packet control unit communicates (311) the buffer information to the billing network element (219). When receiving the buffer information, the billing network element modifies (319) a billing record in response to the buffer information. Specifically, an indication of the amount of data communicated is reduced by the amount of discarded data. The invention is particularly applicable to a GPRS or UMTS communication system.

Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, controlling data packets routed via a packet control means (14) comprising a buffer (16) to a subscriber unit (34) in a cellular communications system (1). The method comprises determining a probability of an interruption in a communication route between the packet control means (14) and the subscriber unit (34); and dependent upon the probability, performing a packet control process for reducing the number of data packets in the buffer (16). The step of performing the packet control process may be further dependent upon the number of data packets in the buffer (16). The packet control process may comprise deleting data packets from the buffer (16) and/or providing for the rate or number of data packets being sent to the buffer (16) to be reduced. The interruption may be due to the subscriber unit (34) being handed over between cells of the cellular communications system (1).
