Abstract: A multi-layer cellular communication network comprises a plurality of underlay cells sharing a common pilot signal scrambling code. A cell identifier including a location area code and a scrambling code are defined for each underlay cell. The home location area code of a remote mobile terminal is received, together with a relocation message from the remote terminal which includes target cell and terminal identifiers. A group of base stations sharing the scrambling code of the identified target cell is determined, and handoff of the remote terminal to one of the base stations is allowed if the home location area code of the terminal is within the location area code of the target cell.

Abstract: A method of re-routing data in a data network (500) comprises the steps of receiving one or more data packets and identifying (515) a congested route (235) from a plurality of selectable routes at a router (410) in the data network based substantially on queue length per route. The router selects (520), in response to the identification, an alternative, preferably less-congested, route (255) and re-routes (525) the one or more data packets to the alternative route. The router may additonally segment the re-routed data and direct the re-routed data to edge routers in preference to core routers. In this manner, in a multi-route data network, a data packet may be delivered to a destination node more efficiently than in known networks. Indeed, the data packet(s) will encounter fewer congested routes when the respective routers have been adapted in accordance with the aforementioned inventive concepts.

Abstract: A network element (115) for a cellular communication system supports base stations (111,113) with a shared pilot signal scrambling code. The network element (115) receives a relocation request message for a remote station (117) supported by a base station (101). The relocation request comprises an identification of the shared scrambling code. A group processor (205) determines a group of potential target base stations (111, 113) for the relocation request in response to the identification of the shared pilot signal scrambling code. A request processor (207) transmits a request message to the target base stations (111, 113). The request message comprises a parameter indication for an uplink transmission from the remote station (117) to the base station (101) and requests the target base stations (111, 113) to measure the uplink transmission. A measurement processor (209) receives measurement reports for the uplink transmission from the target base stations and a selection processor (211) selects a handover target base station (111) from the target base stations (111, 113) based on the measurement reports.

Abstract: A cellular communication system comprises an access point 101 which supports an underlay cell of a first cell on an underlay frequency with the first cell using another frequency. A proximity detector 113 detects a user equipment 109 from its wireless transmission. The transmission is not a transmission of the cellular communication system but of a different transmission technology, for example RFID transmission from an RFID tag. In response to the proximity detection, the access point 101 temporarily transmits a pilot signal on the frequency of the first cell. The user equipment is then switched to the access point and the underlay frequency in response to an indication from the user equipment that the pilot signal has been detected. Following the handover the access point terminates the pilot signal. The approach allows a single frequency lead-in to the underlay cell despite this using a different frequency.

Abstract: A Code Division Multiple Access cellular communication system comprises a base station (101) supporting a remote station (117) making uplink transmissions using an uplink scrambling code in a first cell. A controller (119) determines a first set of uplink scrambling codes from an identity of the first remote station (117) and selects the used code therefrom. The first set has a unique dependency upon the identity. An access point (111) comprises a group processor (203) which determines the group of remote stations registered at the access point (including the first remote station (117)). A measurement code processor (205) determines the uplink scrambling codes potentially used by the registered remote stations. A measurement unit (207, 209) then monitors for received signals using these codes and a handover detection processor (211) generates a potential handover detection for the first remote station (117) in response to a detection of a received signal using the uplink scrambling code of the first remote station (117).

Abstract: A transmitter 100 for transmitting radio signals to a receiver comprises a data generator 101 which generates a plurality of groups of information data. A radio condition processor 107 determines a radio environment characteristic, such as a propagation channel path loss or an interference level. A subset processor 103 generates a data message by selecting a subset of the plurality of groups of information data in response to the radio environment characteristic. The data message is then transmitted by a transmit unit 107. The invention may provide flexible and efficient discontinuous transmission operation which may be particularly suitable for discontinuous transmission of control data. The invention may for example reduce interference in cellular communication systems.

Abstract: A method of handover in a cellular communication system 2 wherein the selection of a handover candidate cell 12, 14, 16, 18 for a subscriber device 20 is made at least partly in dependence on a network identity associated with the subscriber device 20. A comparison may be made between the network identity associated with the subscriber device 20 and a network identity associated with candidate handover cells 12, 14, 16, 18 and the selection of a handover cell may be at least partly based upon a match between the compared network identities. Thus, for example, a user terminal 20 that is able to operate in both 2G (e.g. GSM) and 3G (e.g. UMTS) systems will handover to an operator's own 2G system upon leaving the operator's 3G coverage area rather than handover to a competing 2G system.

Abstract: A cellular communication system and method of operation thereof where the system comprises a first base station (103) supporting user equipments (101) in a first cell. The user equipment transmits previous cell switch candidate data to the first base station. The previous cell switch candidate data comprises an indication of at least one cell switch candidate for at least one base station supporting the user equipment prior to the first base station and may comprise a signal level, service capability indication, access priority or timing indication. The first base station is arranged to receive the previous cell switch candidate data transmitted from the user equipment. The previous cell switch candidate data may be used for synchronising cells or generating cell switch candidate lists, The approach may allow an improved automated or semi-automated generation of neighbour cell lists for a dynamically changing cell layout. The first and previous base station may belong to different communications systems or different radio access networks.
