Abstract:
A method and apparatus is for use in a radio communication system (100) for delivering a message from a system controller (102) to a selective call device. In the system controller (102) the method includes the steps of generating a first message intended for the selective call device (106), changing a delivery state of the first message to undelivered after the first message has been transmitted at least once from the system controller (102), and storing the first message in the system controller (102) when the delivery state is changed to undelivered. In the selective call device the method includes the steps of determining that the first message is stored in the system controller (102) and presenting user with information which indicates that an undeliverable message is being stored by the system controller (102) in response to determining that the first message (102) is stored in the system controller (102).
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for mixed-media call formatting. A preferred format for a call can be determined from different mixed media communication formats. The mixed media communication formats can include a text format and an audible speech format. A media format mode signal can be sent or received. The media format mode signal can indicate a preferred format for a call. The call can be connected in the preferred format.
Abstract:
A wireless communication system (10) employing quadrature amplitude modulation techniques comprises a system controller (22), at least one radio frequency base transmitter (26), and at least one wireless communication device (35). The system controller (22) generates a downlink call (34) for transmission between the radio frequency base transmitter (26) and the wireless communication device (35). Multiplexing an I-channel bit stream (74) comprised of a first set of calls (70) interleaved together and a Q-channel bit stream (80) comprised of a second set of calls (76) interleaved together generates the downlink call (34). One wireless communication device demultiplexes the downlink call (34) and processes the I-channel bit stream (74). Another wireless communication device demultiplexes the downlink call (34) and processes the Q-channel bit stream (80).

Abstract:
The wireless communication system (100) uses a method of improving diversity gain by utilizing a first network (10) operating with a first protocol and at least a second network (20) formed from a plurality of cooperative wireless devices (22, 24, 26, 28, and 29) operating with a second protocol and at least the first protocol. The method includes the step (302) of receiving a signal using the first protocol at one or more of the plurality of cooperative wireless devices intended for a targeted member of the plurality of cooperative wireless devices and the step (308) of processing the signal cooperatively among the plurality of cooperative wireless devices in order to increase diversity gain of the signal to the targeted member.
