    Abstract: A method and apparatus adaptively selects a communication strategy for communicating a message in a selective call radio communication system including a fixed portion (100) and a portable portion (101). The fixed portion (100) transmits (402) an alert signal to the portable portion (101), and awaits (404) an acknowledgment signal including a signal quality estimate from the portable portion (101). The portable portion (101) receives (602) the alert signal, and computes (604, 606) the signal quality estimate therefrom. The portable portion (101) then sends (608) the acknowledgment signal to the fixed portion (100). In response to the acknowledgment signal, the fixed portion (100) selects (407) a transmission strategy in accordance with the signal quality estimate. For compatibility, the transmission strategy requires a matching reception strategy in the portable portion (101). After sending the acknowledgment signal, the portable portion (101) selects (609) the matching reception strategy in accordance with the signal quality estimate sent in the acknowledgment signal without requiring further communication with the fixed portion (100).

    Abstract: A method and apparatus adaptively selects a communication strategy for communicating a message in a selective call radio communication system including a fixed portion (100) and a portable portion (101). The fixed portion (100) transmits (402) an alert signal to the portable portion (101), and awaits (404) an acknowledgment signal including a signal quality estimate from the portable portion (101).     Abstract: The proposed method is characterized in that by making use of a predetermined original transmitting strategy a flag signal is transmitted by a stationary section (100) to a portable section (101), the portable section (101) receives the flag signal by making use of the predetermined receiving strategy, then estimation of signal quality based at least partially on the flag signal as being received is calculated and after calculation of the signal quality estimation a confirmation signal is transmitted to the stationary section (100). Subsequently the stationary section (100) receives the confirmation signal being sent by the portable section (101) including the signal quality estimation and in response to this reception a transmitting strategy for transmission of a message is selected from a plurality of predetermined transmitting strategies corresponding to a plurality of the signal quality estimation value ranges, and namely in compliance with the signal quality estimation. This transmitting strategy requires a corresponding receiving strategy in the portable section (101) from compatibility reasons. After transmission of the confirmation signal the portable section (101) selects from a plurality of predetermined receiving strategies corresponding to a plurality of the signal quality estimation value ranges a corresponding receiving strategy for reception of the message that is selected according to the quality estimation of the signal being transmitted in the confirmation signal without requirement for further communication with the stationary section (100). The apparatus for making the above described method consists of a control unit (104) containing a processor (203) being connected with both a transmitter (202) and a receiver (204), a first selection element (206) being connected with said processor (203) for selection of a transmitting strategy and a transmission element (212) being connected with the first selection element (206) for controlling the transmitter (202).

    Abstract: A method is described for transmitting digital data with minimum splatter and for recovering the same with a conventional frequency modulated (FM) receiver to obtain data having minimum intersymbol interference. The method utilizes an optimized prototype pulse which has been predistorted to match the inverse characteristics of the post detection low pass filter in a conventional FM receiver. When the optimized electric pulse is received and processed by the post detection low pass filter of the conventional FM receiver, a pulse shape exhibiting minimal intersymbol interference is produced.
