Abstract: A controller (118) controls functions related specifically to radiotelephone signalling in a communication system. The controller (118) is physically dislocated from a switch (112) which performs all necessary routing of voice information from radiotelephone system-to-radiotelephone system and radiotelephone system-to-public switched telephone system (PSTN, 100). The controller (118) interfaces the switch (112) via an ISDN-type connection, essentially accessing the switch (112) transparently. This transparent access allows for common, generic switches (Class 5 switches for example) having predetermined user features such as Call Waiting, 3-Way Calling, etc. to be employed. Users of the radiotelephone system (125), via radiotelephone signalling processing by the controller (118), can access and utilize the predetermined features of the switch (112) as required.

Abstract: Mobility is provided for wireless local loop radiotelephone systems by providing the home access network of a subscriber unit with a home access number. Upon registration of the subscriber unit with its home access network, the home access number is transmitted to the subscriber unit for storage there. When the subscriber unit moves to a visited access network and registers there, the subscriber unit transmits the home access number to the visited access network, which uses the home access number to contact the home access network. Since all call originations and terminations by and to the subscriber unit occur via the individual subscriber line appearance at the PSTN, a minimum of special network elements are required for subscriber unit mobility when the home access number is stored at the subscriber unit.

Abstract: Handoff between coverage areas is achieved in a radiotelephone system coupled to standard wireline switches. Upon initiation of a radiotelephone call in one radio coverage area, a directory number and radio call identifier (203) are downloaded to the subscriber unit (101) from a fixed control unit (111) associated with the coverage area. When the subscriber unit determines a handoff to a target radio coverage area is desirable, it transmits the directory number and radio call identifier to another fixed control unit (113) associated with the target radio coverage area. This fixed control unit calls the directory number and is coupled to the first fixed control unit via the standard wireline switch (115, 117). The radio call identifier is then sent to the first fixed control unit to enable the proper connection for handoff.
