The system ( 10 ) carries out a handoff or reallocation of call control from one of the radio access network session clients ( 36, 38 ) to another one of the radio access network session clients ( 36, 38 ) based on the integrity of the redundant communication paths ( 32, 34, 44, 46 ).

Abstract: A controller (118) controls functions related specifically to radiotelephone signalling in a communication system. The controller (118) is physically dislocated from a switch (112) which performs all necessary routing of voice information from radiotelephone system-to-radiotelephone system and radiotelephone system-to-public switched telephone system (PSTN, 100). The controller (118) interfaces the switch (112) via an ISDN-type connection, essentially accessing the switch (112) transparently. This transparent access allows for common, generic switches (Class 5 switches for example) having predetermined user features such as Call Waiting, 3-Way Calling, etc. to be employed. Users of the radiotelephone system (125), via radiotelephone signalling processing by the controller (118), can access and utilize the predetermined features of the switch (112) as required.

Abstract: Billing in a packet switched communication system is based on the quality of service (QoS) associated with each session a user may be involved in or establish, separate from the physical circuits they consume. In the preferred embodiment, a session may be, but is not limited to, a voice connection, an internet connection or a video conference connection. This QoS measure may be combined with total packets exchanged during a session to arrive at a connection detail record. If such a packet switched communication system is coupled to an access network (145), such as a wireless communication system, the use of a single radio channel in the wireless communication system may result in the generation of several detail records based on the number of distinct sessions in which a user engages.
