Abstract: An envelope tracking amplification system (200) that includes an envelope tracking power supply (ETPS) (208) amplifies a radio frequency (RF) signal (201) to produce a linearized amplified signal (213). The envelope tracking amplification system samples the RF signal to produce a sampled RF signal (205). The ETPS (208) produces a control signal based on an instantaneous magnitude of the sampled RF signal and further based on an average magnitude of the sampled RF signal, produces multiple supply voltages, and, based on t he control signal, couples a supply voltage of the multiple supply voltages to an output of the EPTS to produce an output supply voltage (211). The envelope tracking amplification system then amplifies the RF signal based on the outp ut supply voltage to produce the highly linear amplified signal (213).

Abstract: An error corrected amplifier circuit (100) for use in a radio frequency system is provided. The error corrected amplifier circuit (100) includes a first pilot modulation stage (101) and a second pilot modulation stage (103). The first pilot modulation stage (101) creates a first amplified signal (129) having an error component and a first error signal (134) indicative of the errror component. The second pilot modulation stage (103) receives the first amplified signal (129) and the error signal (134) and generates an error reduced amplified signal (158).

Abstract: Power control circuitry (100) uses two attenuator in the transmit path to achiev e wide dynamic range. An intermediate frequency (IF) attenuator (200) is placed before a mixer (212) in the IF section of the transmit path and a radio frequency (RF) attenuator (221) is placed after the mixer (212) in the RF section of the transm it path. Power control circuitry (236) controls setting of the two attenuators in response to a magnitude control signal (102) related t o an RF output signal at a desired power level. To conserve battery power of the subscriber unit, only the RF attenuator (221) is a djusted when the desired power level is to be within a given range below the maximum transmission level. For ranges below the given r ange, the RF attenuator (221) is set for maximum attenuation and the IF attenuator (200) is adjusted.

Abstract: A wireless in-building telecommunications system for voice and data communications is disclosed having at least one node (101) arranged for linking to the PSTN (151) and at least one digital information source (153, 155, 157, 159) multiplicity of user modules (103) (UM's) linked to the node via a shared RF communications path (107). Each UM is coupled to a voice telephone instrument (127) and to one or more data terminals (165). The UM's communicate with the node by exchanging fast packets via the common RF path (107). The node also includes a fast-packet-switched mechanism controlled by a bandwidth allocating scheme to prevent collisions of packets as they are transmitted between the various units (101, 103) (nodes and/or user modules) that may be accessing the RF path (107). Also disclosed is a method for allocating the required bandwidth to each of the users of the common communications path in a wireless in-building telephone system. The invention provides for the combination of both voice and data in a single switch using a common packet structure. It allows for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth based on system loading. This includes not only bandwidth within the voice or data areas of the frame, but also between the voice and data portions. It also synchronizes the transfer of the data and the allocation of bus bandwidth.

Abstract: A supply voltage to a power amplifier is controlled. A signal at a single point in a power amplifier is detected. A signal parameter is determined for the detected signal. The signal parameter is compared to at least one predetermined limit. This comparison result is used to determine whether to adjust a supply voltage to the power amplifier. The signal parameter is, for example, an average power or a peak-to-average power ratio.

Abstract: A feedforward amplifier network (42) generates a fixed offset frequency swep t pilot tone (46) over at least the same frequency band as an input signal (40 ). The fixed offset frequency swept pilot tone (46) is a function of a variable frequency reference signal (52) and a fixed pilot tone clock signal (54). A mixer arrangement (66 and 70), as opposed to a phase lock loop arrangement, helps ensure that the fixed frequency offset can be generated over the swept range. In addition, the feedforward amplifier network (42) incorporates a delay (58) which is added to the variable frequency reference signal (52) an d used by a pilot tone detector (57) so that the pilot tone generator (44) and pilot tone detector (57) are in synchronization over narrow bands to accommodate pilot tone detection in the presence of code division multiple acces channels that are relatively close together.

Abstract: An apparatus (150), system (100) and method (400-440) are illustrated for power amplification of an input signal to produce a substantially linear amplified output signal, for broadband wireless applications such as 3G cellular and broadband CDMA systems, without causing significant intermodulation distortion or spectral growth. The preferred system (100) embodiment includes an envelope detector (110) to determine an envelope detector voltage from the input signal; a tracking power supply (120) to determine a supply voltage, preferably as a substantially quantized replica of the envelope detector voltage; an input signal conditioner (150) to determine, in response to the supply voltage, a corresponding phase adjustment and a corresponding gain adjustment, and to modify the input signal using the corresponding phase adjustment and the corresponding gain adjustment to produce a conditioned input signal for power amplification. The preferred system (100) embodiment further includes a power amplifier which operates using the supply voltage, and which amplifies the conditioned input signal to produce the amplified output signal. In the preferred embodiment, the corresponding phase adjustment and a corresponding gain adjustment are separately and independently determined from piecewise linear mappings of a phase response and an amplitude response, respectively, of the power amplifier to a range of variation of the supply voltage.
