    Abstract: A communication unit 201 comprises a first subsystem 217 with a first receive processor 221 determining a control value according to a first algorithm. A second subsystem 219 has a second receive processor 227 for determining a second control value according to a second algorithm, and a third receive processor 219 determining a third control value according to the first algorithm. The third control value corresponds to the first control value, and is preferably identical to this. The communication unit 201, further comprises a combiner 225, 229 combining the first, second and third power control values into a fourth control value such that the contribution from the third control value reduces the contribution from the first power control value. Preferably, the third control value substantially cancels out the first control value. The communication unit 201 further comprises a transmit unit 211 for transmitting the control signal comprising the fourth control value to at least a second communication unit.

    Abstract: A method of closed-loop multi-stream wireless communication between a transmitter (1) comprising a transmit antenna array of N transmit antenna elements and a receiver (3) comprising a receive antenna array (4) of M receive antenna elements, wherein a plurality of distinct data streams (x1, x2) are transmitted from the transmit antenna array to the receive antenna array and the data streams are weighted by respective complex weighting matrices before being applied to the transmit antenna array. The distinct data streams are separated and estimated at the receiver. The distinct data streams (x1, x2) are applied to respective sub-groups (6, 7) of the transmit antenna elements at least one of which comprises a plurality of the transmit antenna elements, each of the sub-groups comprising at least Nd transmit antenna elements, where M is greater than or equal to (N/Nd). The complex weighting matrices (v1 to vn) are functions of the respective transmission channels (hij) of the data streams (x1, to xG) including the respective sub-groups of transmit antenna elements. Nd is preferably greater than or equal to two. Each of the complex weighting matrices is calculated to be substantially equal to the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue of the matrix H H, where H is the matrix of the equivalent channel including the respective sub-groups of transmit antenna elements (6, 7) seen by the corresponding data stream and H is the Hermitian transform of the matrix H. The number of the transmit antenna elements in each of the sub-groups is preferably re-configurable during operation as a function of channel conditions.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method permit a first, fully loaded base station (13) controlled by a first operator to utilise the unused resources of a second base station (15) controlled by a second operator in a time division duplex cellular communications system. The first base station (13) monitors broadcast channel of the second base station (15) and identifies time slots within the time frame structure and at an assigned carrier frequency which are unused by the second base station (15). It then calculates a new time frame structure and sets up a communications link with a subscriber (17) on the assigned carrier frequency during those time slots which avoid contention with the operations of the second base station (15). The invention, advantageously, does not require synchronisation of the different operator's base stations (13, 15).
