Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the improvement method for a capacity in a duplicate scheme. SOLUTION: A duplicate scheme has a 1st frequency band and a 2nd frequency band. This method consists of steps (steps 402, 404, 410) that decide a capacity available for the 1st frequency band, a step where feedback data with a variable quantity corresponding to the capacity available on the 1st frequency band are transmitted and the feedback data consist of data to enhance the communication quality on the 2nd frequency band, and steps (steps 406, 408, 412, 414) where the transmission on the 2nd frequency band is optimized by using the feedback data when the data are available.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a communication system that uses an antenna array. SOLUTION: A 2nd communication unit generates an antenna weighting for the transmission path between two communication units 1, 2 and feeds it back to the 1st communication unit that has antenna arrays 4, 5, 6. This method is especially applicable to a multiple carrier system like an OFDM system. Only the weighting to a subcarrier that is identified as to have been received with comparatively poor signal quality is calculated, and the result is fed back to the 1st communication unit so as to minimize a request of additional expenses.

Abstract: A method of improving capacity in a duplexing scheme is provided. The duplexing scheme has a first band of frequencies and a second band of frequencies. The method comprises the steps of: determining an amount of available capacity on the first band of frequencies (steps 402, 404, 410), transmitting, on the first band of frequencies, a variable amount of feedback data corresponding to the amount of available capacity on the first band of frequencies, the feedback data comprising data for improving the quality of communications on the second band of frequencies, and optimising (steps 406, 408, 412, 414) transmissions on the second band of frequencies using, when available, the feedback data.

Abstract: A method of selecting a downlink transmit diversity technique (DTDT) from amongst a plurality of techniques for communication with a mobile station, characterised by the step of determining at least a first estimated value of a link characteristic and a radio network controller (RNC) arranged to carry out the method. The performance of a particular transmit diversity technique can be dependent on channel conditions and any additional enhancements used in the system. For example, in UMTS, the basic diversity techniques are the open loop (OL) technique and the two closed loop techniques, closed loop mode 1 (CL1) and closed loop mode 2 (CL2) and the standard enhancement is high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA). HSDPA does not work well with the open loop technique but does work well with some closed loop techniques, e.g. CL1. In addition, the speed of mobile movement can affect a link condition and it is found that at high, medium and low speeds, the best performers are respectively, open loop(OL), closed loop mode 1 (CL1) and closed loop mode 2 (CL2). The invention thus enables the selection of the most appropriate diversity technique. In one embodiment, mobile speed can be presumed by identifying a mobility designation given to the active cells of the mobile, i.e. the mobility designation given according to the location of the cell, e.g. urban, suburban or rural. Open loop techniques include space time transmit diversity (STTD), orthogonal transmit diversity (OTD), delay diversity, time switch transmit diversity (TSTD), phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) and some multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques and closed loop techniques include selection transmit diversity (STD), transmit adaptive array (TxAA) and closed loop MIMO schemes.

Abstract: A multi sector base station for a cellular communication system comprises a plurality of base band processing units 115-125 coupled to a plurality of transceivers 107-111 through a combiner 129. Each sector of the base station is assigned to one transceiver 107-111. The base station further comprises a segmenter 127, which segments the base band processing of one or more channel signals for a sector over at least two of the base band processing means 115-125. The segmenting may be by time or code multiplexing, or reduced gain processing. If one base band processing unit 115-125 fails, only a gradual degradation occurs as segments covered by other base band processing units 115-125 are still operable. Hence, improved reliability is achieved.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of operation of a communication device and to corresponding communication devices. In particular the invention relates to a first method of operation of a communication device, wherein some pilot bits associated with data bits are transmitted with a power at least partly dependent on the data rate at which the data bits are transmitted. At the base station, power control is carried out only on pilot bits with constant power, whereas channel estimation is carried out on all pilot bits. The invention also relates to a second method of operation of a communication device wherein all pilot bits associated with data bits are transmitted with one of a plurality of powers, at least partly dependent on the data rate at which the data bits are transmitted. At the base station a power control process compares the received signal with a plurality of thresholds, and sends a power control signal to the communication device based on the result of the comparison.
